“I actually grew up here. I served in the military and just moved back a little over a year or so ago.”
“It seems like a nice place. When the weather isn’t trying to kill you,” she jokes, and I grin.
“It is. What about you? Where are you from?”
“Los Angeles, originally. I’ve been moving around a lot these last few years, though.”
“For work?” I guess, and she nods.
“Yeah, I’m a photographer, and I’ve been traveling all over for assignments.”
“Sounds exciting.”
“It was.”
“Was?”
“I… I know I’m so lucky to have experienced and done everything I have, but honestly, I’m getting tired of living out of my suitcase. I think that I’m ready for a change.”
“Good,” I say before I can think, and she frowns.
“Good?”
“Yeah, uh, I’m glad that you’re able to see that dreams can change. So many people force themselves to do something because it’s what’s expected of them or what they thought that they wanted,” I babble.
I certainly can’t tell her that I said good because it meant that convincing her to settle down with me would be easier now.
The sound of a snowmobile heading my way comes from outside, and I know that my time alone with Cameron is limited.
“Have dinner with me,” I blurt, and she blinks.
“What?”
“Go out with me while you’re here. Have dinner with me.”
“Is this just to ensure that you get your clothes back?” She asks with a smirk, and I laugh.
“That is my favorite shirt,” I tell her, and she grins.
“Alright. Dinner.”
A knock sounds at my door, and we both turn to look at it as Niko opens it and comes in.
“Hey, just wanted to check and make sure that everything was alright.”
“We’re good,” I tell him, and he nods.
“Cameron, this is my boss, Niko. Niko, this is Cameron.”
“Nice to meet you,” Cameron says, and I flash Niko a warning sign when he steps forward to shake her hand.
He waves at her instead, giving me a knowing look.
“Did you want a ride back to the ski resort?” He asks her, and she nods.
“That would be great, thanks.”
“Tomorrow night,” I tell her when she turns to me and she smiles.
