SCOTTIE

Istared at my reflection in the mirror, taken aback by the smile on my face. My eyes danced with anticipation, and my face was flushed, though that could be from the long, hot bath I’d taken. Still, I liked thinking the healthy glow and the curve of my lips were because of the man I’d prepped for.

Initially, I’d had no plans for being with Griff tonight. He had a meeting with his boss. It was the perfect chance to sleep through the night in my bed for a change. All the going from my place to his had caught up with me, but I was no good at turning down Griff for sex. Finally, I’d found a man who knew how to sex me up and still treat me nicely after.

Humming, I entered my bedroom and rummaged through my drawer for the new underwear I’d purchased. The tiny black lace rested snugly at my waist and cupped my ass in a gentle caress. I couldn’t wait for Griff’s reaction.

A knock on my door startled me from the full-length mirror. I snagged my robe from the bed and shrugged into it.

“Come in.”

Jay walked in, dressed nicely in jeans and a soft yellow shirt with a denim jacket. “You’re still not dressed?”

“Huh?”

“I want to take you out for a drink. To celebrate.”

“Celebrate what?”

He sighed dramatically. “My reluctant acceptance of being an adult. I got a job. A proper job I won’t abandon in a few weeks.”

“Yeah?”

He nodded. “You were right. I need to get my shit together and finish the nursing program I quit.”

“You mean it?”

“Yes. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. Some things will take time, but I’m coming to terms with things.”

“Oh, Jay.” I threw my arms around his waist and hugged him tight. He might not have said so exactly, but I was sure he was referring to his relationship with Griff. While I would always support the decisions he made, him forgiving his father would be so much better and not just for us. All the poor choices he’d made, especially him losing every job he got, had to do with the resentment he harbored toward Griff.

He squeezed me briefly, then let me go. “So, what do you say? Let me buy you a drink?”

I glanced at the clock on the wall. Even if Griff finished his meeting early, he could wait another hour or two for me, given the reason. No, I couldn’t give him false hope. Jay was still thinking. He hadn’t decided on anything yet, so it was better to say nothing.

“Sure. Let me get dressed, and I’ll join you.”

“Don’t take long.”

I quickly dressed, then threw together an overnight bag I would take with me after to see Griff. Mostly my toiletries. I preferred wearing Griff’s shirt around his bedroom anyway. Thank god his roommate was hardly ever home.

“Let’s take two separate cars,” I said when I met Jay in the hall downstairs.

He frowned. “Why?”

“I’m seeing Gr—err, my you-know-who later.”

“Hmm. His name starts with ‘Gr,’ then. Is it Greg?”

“No.”

“Grayson?”

“I’m not playing this game.” I grabbed my keys from the hook and ran out of the house. The last thing I needed was for him to mention his father’s name. I might not keep a straight face. Just the thought of Griff always left me flushed and bothered.

Jay drove away, and I followed him to a trendy bar we’d never been to. I parked next to his car and joined him on the sidewalk.
