When I focused, his jaw was taut.

“Why?” I demanded, unable to mask the exasperation in my voice as I saw him hide from me. “Is it because En mocks you?”

My hands slid up to his wrists, tugging at them with as much strength as I could, but he did not relent, did not allow me to see his eyes or his entire face to understand what he was feeling or what he was thinking.

When he didn’t respond, not even a nod or a denial, I paused and stared at him.

“How do I speak with him?” Calm anger rang in my voice, and it startled me because I was not one to feel such intense, dark emotions. But this was Eon, and En was giving him a difficult time because he was being himself withme.

He let out a sound of discomfort, and it did nothing but harden my resolve. “You can’t be serious.”

“Now, Eon.” I bared my fangs at him despite his eyes being shut.

Recognising the firm edge in my tone, Eon let out a long sigh. Then he removed his hands, and I studied the way his eyes began to change, the white turning into a deep red as if ink had been splattered on the purest sheets, a blaze burning fiercely as the change neared completion.

Then I was lookingup.

“Little Elf,” En said in that deep, rumbling voice, his lips twisted upwards and his pointy teeth long and daunting. “I’m so happy to see you again.”

My hands shot out to shove him away, but he seized my wrists and slammed them back on the ground. I gasped, my back arching as hot pain shot up my arms.

His smirk widened. “You had something to say to me, didn’t you?”

Enjoying my pain,I thought, because that was what his kind liked. They liked being rough and aggressive, and he was consistently expecting the same from me despite knowing that I was no Spider at all.

But maybe, in being his mate, pain meant something the books didn’t know?

Still, that didn’t mean I was powerless, especiallynot when I recognised him as my mate.

“Release me, now,” I ordered, glaring at him with as much courage as I could despite not being able to stare directly into his fiery eyes. “Otherwise I will not even glance your way.”

To emphasise my point, I turned my head to the side.

“Oh, my!” he cheered, and I was taken aback by the undisguised glee in his tone. He sat back but pulled me along with him, his thick arms imprisoning me as he positioned me on his lap. “How fearless!”

“Stop mocking me and release me, now!”

En shook his head, his arms tightening until I felt all my organspressingtogether. I wheezed, straightening my back to ease the pressure on my lungs and windpipe.

“I’m not mocking you,” he said merrily. “I wouldn’t have picked you if you weren’t brave.”

Ignoring my protests and struggles, he began to hum happily as he pushed my hair back with his nose, gazing at my shoulders with a keen gleam in his fiery eyes.

I was losing his attention.

“Enough!” I yelled, throwing my arms up to cage En’s head with my hands, my claws strategically positioned against his skull. A shiver of satisfaction—ofvictory—rolled down my spine at the way his blazing eyes widened, at the way he sat frozen, and the way his lips parted as though he didn’t expect me to challenge him.

“Youwilllisten to me.” I tried to stare into those scorching pits, and they burned, but I still looked, and his eyes widened even further. My claws inched closer to his skin, but they didn’t tear anything.

En blinked, then blinked again before closing his mouth.

“I’m listening,” he said,quietly.

Something in me roared at the knowledge that I had silenced this mighty predator, that he had obeyed me without any motives.

“Good,” I praised, noting the way his body twitched. Still, he remained quiet. “Why do you rebel against your other half?”

I had come to learn that things would turn out much simpler if I was blunt and quick with En, otherwise his attention would waver, and he would find a way to corner me before I would realise he’d done so.
