His calmness felt like salt grinding into bleeding wounds. My eyes watered, bottom lip quivering, my knees suddenly too weak to hold me up as they buckled. But I didn’t quite make it to the ground because the Spider rushed to catch me, holding me tightly to him.

Despite my blurry vision and shaky limbs, I shoved him away from me and yelled, “Don’t touch me!”

I had enough of this place, enough of Spiders and enough ofhim.

Wiping my eyes, I reached to grab my companion from the fire-eyed panther, baring my fangs when he showed a little aggression. He paused, glancing towards the Spider before he allowed me to take Keia from him.

She rushed towards me, and after nuzzling her and checking she was fine, I made to leave his land.

“Don’t move.” The warning came low and firm, freezing me in place. “It’s taking a lot for me to ignore my instincts. Don’t you dare take another step away from me. Otherwise, prepare to face the consequences.”

I turned to face him, my head lowered in a show of apology. “Under your permission, Spider, I’d like to leave your land.”

“I won’t allow that.”

My head snapped up. “Why not?!” I demanded, taking a step towards him.

The Cyrva male glanced at my feet before he stepped closer to me, blood-red lips curved up faintly. “If I allow you to leave now, you won’t come back to me again.”

I folded my arms over my stomach and pursed my lips. “I have no reason to come back to you.”

“I told you before.” He gripped my jaw with enough pressure to silence me, angling my head up and leaning down to press his lips against mine. Shock speared through me at the foreign contact. I froze, my eyes widening, my hands unfolding weakly.

The Spider snickered as he retreated, his red eyes brightening as he looked down at me. He held my face gently in his large hands, his forehead touching mine. “Come back to me tomorrow. Agreed?”

His thumbs delicately stroked the skin under my eyes, his ruby gaze holding me in place. The more I looked at his eyes, the more I noticed the fire inside them dying.

This male was the brother of my sister’s assaulter and killer. He knew his brother killed my sister; he knew his brother was the reason there was bad blood between our two species. He knew he was a predator to my kind—tome—and yet… he wanted me? As what? A friend? A mate?

I hoped to the heavens it wasn’t that.

The fool I was, I asked, “You won’t hurt me?” And it was a foolish question to ask because that was what his kind did. Predators. Vicious.

The Cyrva’s eyes studied my face, roamed and stared while his big hands held my head up.

“I won’t.”

I still didn’t trust him. I lowered my eyes, my shoulders slumping as I exhaled heavily, and reluctantly nodded twice.

One more visit couldn’t hurt… I hoped.

Only one more. Whatever game he was playing had to end after that.

He wrapped his huge arms around me again, one looping around my back and the other around my shoulders. He snuggled his face into my pastel blue hair, and I felt the stretch of his lips as he grinned. Sharp teeth grazed the cartilage of my left ear, but he didn’t bite or draw blood. I fidgeted in his arms, but the more I did that, the more he toyed with my ear.

“You’re mean, you know that?” I tried to move my head away to hide my ear, but he held me tighter and pulled me closer.

He made a sound of delight, and after squeezing me and gently toying with my ear a little more, he let me go, lips stretched into a wide grin and eyes nearly sparkling.

“Go.”

I huffed, calling for my companion before jumping away.

He didn’t fit what the books said about his breed. Cyrvas were fire Spiders that resembled the red and black carnage they caused. Vicious and brutal, impatient and aggressive and devastating. And so far, he was—for the most part—none of that.

But maybe it was only a matter of time before his true nature showed itself. Maybe he was trying toensnareme, and that thought sobered me up.

“Right.” I squared my shoulders and walked to the portal leading to the Fairies. “I need to find a way to get rid of his thread on my chest before someone sees.”
