He was grinning, and his smile nearly blinded me because it caused his hair, eyes, and wings to glow more. Quickly, I moved my palm to shield my eyes.

“Oh, my sincere apologies!” He sounded like a Fairy who could sing, and I didn’t know what was possibly more attractive: his face, his wings, or his voice.

“No, no! I apologise for staring,” I replied, smiling shyly as he grinned more, causing the glowing to intensify. I covered my eyes with both hands, slowly removing them a moment later when the light dimmed.

When I looked up, I saw the Fairy’s eyes closed in a look of concentration. He opened them, and a calm smile bloomed on his face again.

“Were your trades successful at the Market, lady Elf?” he asked, using his wings to lift himself to stand a few spaces before me.

Not looking away from those captivating wings, I nodded my head.

His harmonious chuckle snapped my gaze towards him.

“The name is Snow. It’s a delight to see your beauty, lady Elf.” He placed a hand over his heart—over his mark—and bowed his head, his eyes never leaving me as he smiled.

I smiled back and placed my hand over my own mark, bowing while looking at him. “Kenia,” I said. “The delight is all mine to see your charm, Snow.”

We held gazes. Bright amusement danced in his pretty eyes. The corners of my mouth quivered just as his did. His shoulders vibrated with a subdued snicker while I pursed my lips to hold in my giggle before we were both bursting into silly laughter.

“Oh, dear,” he gasped, shaking his head. “That was terrible.”

I scrunched my nose at him, struggling to subdue my own mirth. “It was a stiff attempt at being formal and you know it.”

“It was fine until you laughed.”

“You did, too.”

“Apologies. Your expression was amusing.”

I gaped at him, though another burst of laughter escaped me.

As I caught my breath, I looked at his mark again and almost sighed at its beauty. It was of his white and green wings with a big white snowflake in the middle.

My mark, in comparison, was of a green leaf—indicative of my Elf nature—with a blue water drop at the tip of the leaf, which identified my element and gift.

“You have the gift of snow, like your name?” I inquired, looking at his wings again before shaking my head to remember my manners. Keia untangled herself from my blue hair and flew to rest on my head.

Snow smiled warmly at her before meeting my gaze. “Yes. Would you like to see it?”

I grinned and rushed to nod. He grabbed my palms together and placed his over my own, his face melting into a serene expression. Soon, his hair, wings, and palms glowed a bright yellow and white, and then my palms tingled with something moist and cold.

When he removed his hands, I gasped.

“Snow!” I exclaimed, gawking at the coldness in my palms that began to melt, slowly dripping from the thin gaps between my fingers. I played with water all the time, but I didn’t have the skill to change it to a different form.

How bizarre, that it could be so solid.

Snow smiled, his cheeks tinting a sweet, red hue.

I awed, and then it formed into a delighted laugh before I threw my arms around him—mindful of his wings—to show my appreciation. He glowed once more as he wrapped his arms around me as well, accepting my gesture.

His warmth was the kind that made my skin hum, a flash of giddiness travelling up my spine because all that magic gave me a rush. It was similar to the burst of energy I’d get when eating a welmik twig. Thrilling, almost addictive, making me buzz with too much delight.

But all too soon, his frame became rigid, his palms glowing again as he summoned his magic. I jolted from its strong presence as his wings flared, and he coiled a protective arm around my shoulders as Keia hid behind my hair again. When I looked up at him, his gaze was fixed over my head.

Frowning, I looked behind me and stilled, feeling like the colour drained from my head when I met familiar red eyes.
