I looked up in time to see Keia fluttering towards me. A shriek burst from my lips before I pulled her to me, her soft feathers tickling my face as I rubbed my scent on her while she nuzzled me. She chirped to reassure me she was well, and I nodded, pressing my nose into her small chest and inhaling deep, letting out a long sigh.

That soft heartbeat fluttering in that little body threatened to crumble me.

I peeked at the Spider, warmth blooming under my skin at his grin as he observed us.

If it weren’t for him, I would have lost Keia. But then again, this whole mess was because of him. If he didn’t insist on seeing me every day, none of this would have happened.

After rubbing my skin on her feathers one more time, I gently nudged her away, smiling as I watched her give us some space. No matter where she chose, I knew she would remain close.

Inhaling a long, quiet breath, I moved towards the Spider hesitantly, wary because his kind didn’t deal with words. They communicated through actions.

To him, my words—no matter how sincere or sweet—would be meaningless.

I stood on my knees in front of him, pressing my lips together because I didn’t know what to do next. He took the next step for me, grabbing my waist with measured pressure before hoisting me up on his lap. The difference in our height and structure made sitting awkward, so he pushed me to almost kneel on his lap instead.

My face warmed as his muscles pressed against me. He was so unlike me. Huge. Firm, almost solid and unmovable. I knew that all of my bones combined would not weigh the same as one of his.

When he took my palms and licked the scrapes from my earlier falls, he did so lightly, gently, knowing one touch could shatter me. Because if these big hands were capable of ending creatures of his own kind, what could he do to me if he wasn’t careful?

But he was careful, so very careful, staring at me intensely and with an expectant look in his eyes as he lowered my healed hands.

There was only one gesture I remembered him doing. He did it so frequently and at the most random moments, like it was something natural and common among his people.

With a defeated sigh, I stood higher on his lap and reached to grip his shoulder to balance myself. His thick arms curled around my waist, and I didn’t know if it was to keep me close or to support me. But I still couldn’t reach his face. I puffed my cheeks and placed my small palm at the back of his neck, pulling his head down towards me.

He remained quiet, but Iknewhe was enjoying my struggle.

“Cut it out already!” I complained.

A grin stretched his lips as he lowered his head for me. When he was comfortably close, I raised my head and lightly pressed my lips against his.

The Spider froze, then his arms tightened around me. My hands hurried to latch on to his shoulders for more support as he drew me into him further. Our eyes were only half closed, and I all but burned under his heated gaze.

His hand gripped my jaw, his thumb pressing on my left cheek while his pointer finger pressed on my right one. I didn’t know if he did it to keep me in place or to warn me against moving. The Cyrva applied slight pressure and my lips parted. His tongue—warm and thick and long—slipped into my mouth, and I parted my lips wider instinctively, letting out a small, startled whimper when our tongues brushed.

The Spider became warmer under my palms. His heart drummed fast and loud, and my ears perked at the sound, latching on to it like it was a song. His lips moved against mine slowly, and I wondered if it was because he had to be careful of his larger fangs.

When he realised that my lips were staying open for him, he moved his hand to my right ear and gently squeezed. I fell completely pliant in his arms, a soft, long sound vibrating at the back of my throat. My pointy ears curled, and his lips tilted up against mine.

Giddiness washed over me. I pushed him by his shoulders to fill my lungs with air again, but even when our lips untangled, he didn’t move back much. Instead, he took the opportunity of my exposed throat, slowly dragging his tongue up from my collarbones to just below my chin.

My breath hitched, eyes shutting and toes curling.

Forget my toes, my ears curledfurtherand I was mortified.

His arms chained me to him, one wound around my waist and the other resting vertically on my spine, keeping me close and upright as I tried leaning back.

“En-nough,” I stuttered, trying to push him back, knowing he would release me whenhewanted.

So when his hot lips finally left my skin, cool surprise crashed into me.

He drew back but kept me close, his breathing irregular and his heart beating without control. Almost like he didn’t want to stop. Almost like he wantedmore.

But he listened to me.

He was grinning when he pressed our foreheads together, his eyes just about sparkling as he cupped my small face with his large hands.

“We need to go, now. Lyn is trying to reach to me.”
