I was about to ask him why he was grinning, why he was staring at me like that, but Keia’s warning silenced my curiosity.

“I need to go back. My brother is looking for me,” I whispered, gently tugging his hands away when he tried touching my ears again.

Eon watched quietly as I nuzzled his palms, turning my face from the right to the left to exchange scents.

He was familiar now.

I didn’t knowwhatI was feeling, but I… didn’t dislike him.

He was a predator, but he wasn’t a monster.

Not anymore.

Not to me.

And it shouldn’t have been like that.

“Will I see you again tomorrow?” he whispered softly, asking that one question that I had started to foolishlyanticipatebefore I would leave.

I smiled and snuggled into his embrace, lifting my head so my chin rested against his chest while I looked up at him. Those ruby eyes, that cherry-red hair and those soft blood-red lips…

Danger was not supposed to be so beautiful.

He was supposed to be the enemy.

“I’ll come back to you,” I promised, and this time I meant it.

He smiled.

And I didn’t know where my next breath went.

This was the first time I’d seen him smile, and my stars I’d be lying if I said it was just beautiful. His smile was breathtaking, blinding and mesmerising, and I wished to see him smilingallthe time. It made those laughing dips mark his cheeks, and his eyes twinkled brightly, and it was so genuine and relaxed and—

“So sweet!”

And Iadoredit.

Eon let out a snarl and shoved me beneath him, pinning my wrists by my sides. He glared down at me with malicious eyes, and I cowered into the ground.

“What did you say?” He bared his teeth at me, his fangs glinting as they tried to elongate, but he was trying to control himself since his fangs kept elongating and retracting.

I frowned and widened my irises. It was a trick I’d learned growing up, one that worked on everyone whenever I did something I shouldn’t have and wanted to escape a scolding.

And when I saw that it worked on a Spider too, my lips almost twitched into a victorious smile.

Eon’s grip on my wrists loosened, but he didn’t cover his teeth. He lowered his head with that hostile look, and my irises instantly shrank back to their normal size as I once again tried to get away from him. He hummed, most likely taking pleasure in my retreat, moving his lips to my left cheek before he gave me a long, slow lick.

I shivered.

He snickered and eased off me. “Go.”

I stood up and called for Keia, puffing my cheeks at him to show my displeasure. But his smirk only widened.

Keia flapped and rested on my right shoulder, and I did the usual by putting all of my hair on my left, keeping my ears covered. I took a step forward, ready to leave after receiving his permission.

“Be safe…” His voice had a hint of an emotion I couldn’t explain. “My Elf.”

I huffed, fighting the smile that wanted to creep onto my lips before I jumped from his land and sprinted to the Fairies’ portal.
