Bones popped and grass rustled, and then the aura around me shifted.

My spine stiffened instantly.

It felt strong, heavy and too much for me, an invisible weight pressing against me, stirring my instincts and almost making me want to flop flat on my stomach.

I’d never felt sopressuredto submit.

Eerie silence stretched, so I turned, only to gulp when I saw Eon watching me in his true form. He bowed his head—bowedto me—before he crawled over to two trees that were fairly close.

Silent, I watched as he climbed gracefully. His large form made the trees tremble slightly, but the trees wereenormous, so even though they shook, they still withheld his weight.

Carefully, Eon stood on a thick branch, his abdomen arching down towards his middle as his limbs reached down to his silk-spinning organs. With his large, thick red thread produced, he started spinning and spreading his silk around. That silk must have been the strong, elastic kind, but it could also have been the sticky thread he’d use to trap his prey.

Entranced and utterly awed, I watched as his web came to life, each swirl, each curve so graceful and magnificent it left me rooted to my spot. For such a massive form, his movements were fluid and easy, like being in this body gave him the most freedom.

I squinted my eyes as his design neared completion. On a closer, more searching look, the web had… something written within it.

Spider’s Elf.

Silk was precious, according to the books, but my kind didn’t value it. Other species, however, went to extreme lengths to obtain it—the Vampires, I’d read once, were very fond of it for their clothing and bedding.

And he’d used that precious material to impress me. To create a huge web with his intentions stitched into it—something that would exist not for a short moment but for a long time. It was woven so elegantly, the silk appearing like shiny rubies under the light as the words glimmered.

Eon reverted to his second form, the form that helped him blend in with others around him. He watched me in silence, but I couldn’t move my eyes from the web. He’d used his body, his actions, his silk like his blood weaving hope and desire into words. And the way he watched me, closely, keenly, waiting for my reaction and how I would respond to that.

My lips rose into a shy, delighted smile, one he stared at intently. I hummed a soft, sweet tune, closing my eyes for a moment as the warmth of affection spread through me and made my limbs buzz. My body moved, light and fluid as the feeling manifested itself into a gentle dance. Words poured out of my mouth, honeyed and hushed as I told him what being with and without him meant—how he occupied all my thoughts recently, how being away from him dulled my days and lengthened time until I prayed for another night to pass so I could see him again.

His eyes tracked me as I moved, a small, serene smile on his lips. And by the end of my song, I found myself on Eon’s lap with my palms on his abdomen so I could feel his warmth. I was smiling, thrilled with the way he looked at me and that soft smileIhad put on his lips.

“Does that mean you were impressed?” he asked, leaning down, nudging me on my back until he hovered over me. He knew, but he sought confirmation I was more than willing to give.

I squinted my eyes, pretending to think. “I was more than impressed, and I answered to you. Now what?”

He grinned, charming and so pleased before he pressed our lips together in a slow, sweet touch.Coaxing my lips apart, he slipped his tongue inside, and I let out an eager noise as I curled my fingers around his shoulders and tugged him closer. I didn’t feel the urge to fight him for dominance this time, content with having him close because he was no stranger now but my mate. That this strong, beautiful, dangerous predator wasmymate, mine—

With a startled gasp, I withdrew from the kiss. Eon blinked and stared down at me with a raised brow, far too calm.

“Eon, how—how are we—” Words evaporated under the chaos of thoughts in my head.

Now what?I’d asked him as a joke, but it wasn’t a joke anymore. How would we work when we were far from compatible physically? Eon washuge, I was not. How would we be when he was a predator and I was a prey? Our instincts and habits contradicted each other tremendously.

Something must have shown on my face because his blank expression softened. He cupped my face with his large palms and kissed my lips lightly, lingering like he wanted more.

“Don’t work your heart about it.” He moved his lips to my cheek and gave me a slow, long lick. “I know what to do.”

Right, because he always knew what todo, whereas I only knew what tosay.

With a sigh that deflated the tension in me, I lifted my hand and stroked his soft, cherry-red hair. Closing his ruby eyes, he brushed his nose on my inner wrist and inhaled deep, slowly moving down my arm until he was nuzzling the column of my throat.

“My Elf,” he murmured, his voice dropping low.

A shiver raced down my spine when his warm tongue licked up my throat. His hands fell to caress my belly, and I tensed as his touch tickled slightly. He stopped, and I felt his lips stretch up against my skin.

Curiosity peaked like a tidal wave.

Just as I opened my mouth to ask what amused him, he whispered, “Pixie.”
