I made a sound of frustration, my small fangs bared as I managed to flip us around so I was on his stomach, looking down at him. It was a playful gesture, and when he didn’t get angry, I knew we were only playing.

“Spider,” I whispered as I curled my small hands around his thick throat. “I could kill you right this moment.”

A startled laugh erupted from his lips, deep and husky and rich and warm, like a spring night. My grip on his throat faltered, my pulse slowing down to a languid thump as I gazed at him. The amused curl of those red lips made my breath catch, made my eyes droop, made me swallow and part my lips to inhale a bigger, deeper breath.

And then he pinched both of my ears, and I fell limp against him with a startled shriek.

“Can you kill me now?” He stroked my ears, strong enough to keep me down, trembling and whining against his solid chest.

“Not fair!”

He sighed, an entertained, mocking sound. “Life is just so unfair, my Elf.”

But even as he said that, Eon eased his torture to stroke my hair instead. Languid and leisurely, like he was delighting in having me in his arms. The touch of his huge hand soothed me, spilled his warmth into me until I wasalmostsleepy.

It overwhelmed me how such a deadly body possessed such a gentle touch.

A glimpse towards the sky showed a darkened canvas. My lips thinned, a frown tugging them down as I curled into him.

But leaving the comfort of his warmth again was inevitable. Being careless too soon would ruin everything.

“Eon,” I called quietly.

He hummed, shocking me when hekissedthe top of my head. My ears almost curled, and the warmth under my skin buzzed a touch brighter.

I wished I could stay in his arms forever.

“I need to go back.”

Eon’s hand ceased its strokes. Instead, he lightly fisted some of my hair and pulled back so I was looking up at his irritated face.

“Stay with me,” he demanded. I shook my head. He curled his upper lip back and exposed his top teeth slightly, then spun us around, pinning me to the ground.

“Stay with me, Kenia.” He bared his teeth more; his fangs hadn’t lengthened.Yet.

I frowned. “I can’t. My people will become aware of my absence and if they find out, I won’t be able to see you again.”

That angered him because his fangsdidlengthen, and he let out a loud, terrifying sound. “You’re mine!”

“That’s true.” I reached up and cupped the side of his jaw. It soothed him a little. “But no one will agree to us being together.”

“I don’t care aboutanyone!I care aboutyou!” His voice rose a touch, almost causing me to flinch.

His eyes were beginning to burn with that fire inside them. My eyes heated and watered, as if I was staring directly at the sun, but I maintained contact with him, even if it caused a little discomfort.

Eon expelled a sharp, heavy breath. “I’m not good with words,” he confessed. “Actions are the way I communicate, but sometimes youdon’tunderstandwhat I am trying to tell you.”

I blinked as he licked my cheek again, long and slow before he rested his forehead against mine. I stared at him curiously.

We were two different species from two completely different worlds. Our people didn’t mix or interact to expand our knowledge about one another. There would inevitably be times when we didn’t understand each other.

“I adore you,” he said with some difficulty.

My eyes widened.

“I want to be your home, your family, your everything. I—” He narrowed his eyes and bared his extended fangs, his frustration loud without him saying so. “I want you to stay.”

He leaned down and licked my cheek again, keeping himself as close as possible while still making sure he watched me, that I saw him and felt the sincerity in how he held me.
