When I gazed up, I was met with the smallest smirk, so small it was almost undetectable, but it looked sincere and harmless.

“It’s only blood.”

No. It wasn’t only blood. He didn’t understand and couldn’t understand because blood was something he could never avoid; his entire existence revolved around spilling and seeing and sipping blood.

En bumped his head against mine carefully, rubbing gently as his hands lightly pulled me towards him. Somehow, he managed to move my head so my face was pressed against his neck, his scent surrounding me.

His scent.

This was perhaps the first time I was so aware of it.

He smelled like fresh green leaves under the sun, after a gentle fall of rain.

Inexplicably intoxicating to me—so intoxicating that I felt dazed. It made me think of home.

Hewas home.

There was a saying the older Elves liked;an Elf would fully recognise someone as their mate based on whether that person’s scent made them think of home.

Home, because that was where we belonged.

That was what wasours.

Mine.

“I am delighted that you seem so fond of my scent,” he said from above. “But I thought you wanted to move?”

“No,” I murmured and without a second thought, my fingers were no longer in his flesh. It was like I was hypnotised, unmindful of my blood-smeared fingers or the fact that En was gazing at me with a visibly confused yet attentive expression.

All I could think about was his scent. I wanted to bathe in it. I wanted it mixed with my own scent to find out what combination they’d create.

En seemed so uncharacteristically docile and compliant. Something that should have rung the alarm in my head. He allowed me to push him back and move him however I wanted, allowed me to almostcontrolhim.

It should have raised so many alarms.

But I just wanted that scent around me, with me, on me.

After pushing him down onto his elbows and leaning over him, I wrapped my arms around En’s neck and held his head close to my chest, massaging my face against his hair and face with closed eyes. He was soft and warm with sharp edges and hard angles.

Behind his ears, under his earlobes, and around his neck, his scent was thicker and stronger as though it was tangible. The more I inhaled his scent, the more it felt like I was tasting it.

Curiosity hummed inside me to see how En was reacting to my sudden display of affection. As I massaged my face against his neck, I drew back slightly and looked up to see him looking in the other direction. His brows were furrowed, and his lips were turned down, his eyes slightly droopy as he blinked lazily.

Although he was frowning, he was allowing me to do what I wanted.

Though he didn’t seem to understand the value of what I was doing.

There was something Eon always did, something I never quite understood, but perhaps it meant the same as what I was trying to do.

I pulled back slowly and looked at him, properly looked at him—stared into his eyes as soon as he turned his head to see what I was doing next.

When I had his full attention, I closed my eyes and moved closer, then licked his left cheek, from his jaw to just below his eye, doing it as slowly and as gently as I remembered Eon doing it.

En went completely still.

I opened my eyes as I retreated, but a hand grabbed the back of my head and quickly returned me to his neck, keeping me there.

“I have averystrong desire to bite you,” he rumbled, his deep voice a teasing purr in my ears.
