We’re driving down the road, a country song playing in the background that’s hitting a little too close to home.

“Can I ask you a question?” She’s looking out the window of my truck.

“Fire away.” I rest my hand on top of the steering wheel.

“Why didn’t you say goodbye?” Her question makes my breath pinch. It’s almost painful.

“I waited; you know.” She peers down at her hands that are in her lap. “I waited and you never showed.”

Thankfully we’re pulling in her driveway, so I park the truck. I remember that night. She’s asked me to meet her at the lake. I was leaving the next morning, and we hadn’t spoken since the kiss. Since I screwed up.

“It had nothing to do with you, Rosie.” I turn in my seat to face her. “Adam showed up at the house and wanted to have one last night out. East was there, Rex, and a few other guys. I went and planned to cut out early, but I had a hard time trying to make up an excuse to leave.” She nods her head. “I couldn’t really tell him I needed to leave to meet you.”

“I get it,” she says quietly.

“Doesn’t make it right.” The music still plays as the heavy emotion settles in the truck. “I again, did the selfish thing. I had my pity party. I got wasted. I figured if I got drunk it would numb me just enough that when I got on that plane it wouldn’t feel like I was being ripped apart.”

“I thought you forgot me.” She finally turns her pretty face to me. “I didn’t want to keep you from leaving, Grey. I just wanted you to take a small part of me with you.”

My fingers lift and I run my thumb along her jaw. “I did. Not just a piece. All of you. You were always with me, Rosie.”

A tear slips down her cheek and it lands on my skin. “You were with me too.”

Her words give me the hope I had been needing since I arrived.

Her phone buzzes again. I had heard it multiple times tonight, so before she could get to it, I reach behind her and slide it out of her pocket.

“Grey.” She lunges for it, but I already see it.

Anger builds in my chest as I read a slew of text messages from her ex-fiancé.

Blaine: answer your fucking phone.

Blaine: ANSWER me bitch.

Blaine: This isn’t over. Don’t make me come out there. You won’t like what happens. I can promise you that.

Her face is pure panic. I calmly lay the phone in her hand. “Go inside.”

“What?” She looks confused. “Where are you going?”

“Just get inside and wait for me.” I lean across the seat, opening the door. “I’ll be back.”

She hesitates, her eyes pleading with me to not do what I’m about to do, but she gives in, closing the door behind her before she goes to the house. I watch her close the door then I shift into reverse.

Blaine McKnight fucked up. Big time.

Chapter 37

Tilly

I’ve been pacing for so long I thought I had rubbed off all the fuzz on my favorite socks. Greyson left four and a half hours ago. I hadn’t heard from him. I wasn’t one hundred percent sure where he went, but I had a good idea. I wasn’t sure how he even knew where Blaine lived, but I didn’t put nothing past him these days.

Headlights shine through my window as I make the thousandth trip from my dining room to kitchen. I hold my breath as they shut off, wrapping my arms around my waist. It seems like hours had passed when the knob jiggles, then Greyson steps in.

I sigh in relief when he closes the door and faces me.

I drop my arms. “Where have you been? I’ve been worried sick.”
