“Me.”

“What about you?”

My brother, being the dick he was, yanked my head back and placed a wet, sloppy kiss on my cheek. “There, you big ass baby. Happy now?”

Pushing him off me, everyone laughed, including Claudia, who walked over, quickly kissing me on the lips. “Behave and I’ll see you later.”

Chapter Twenty

Claudia

The second I ran into the hospital, I could see it was more than just a pileup on the interstate. Nurses were running around, shouting instructions at anyone who would listen as the hospital administrator, Bill Caldwell, issued his own orders, but no one was listening. Marching over to him, I grabbed his arm. “What the hell is going on, Bill? This is chaos?”

“Oh, thank God,” the bulbous man sighed, handing me his clipboard. “I didn’t think you’d answer the text.”

“You fired me,” I snipped as first responders rushed past with injured needing to be seen. “I shouldn’t be here at all.”

“Please, Claudia. I can’t do my job and yours too.”

“I want my privileges back and my title of Chief of General Surgery.”

“Done.”

“And I want that funding for the NICU, Bill. Those babies need it and you fucking know it.”

“Fine!” the man shouted. “Will you just make sense of this chaos?”

Quickly scanning the information on the clipboard, I asked, “Tell me what I need to know.”

“Tractor trailer jack-knifed on the I-80. Multi vehicle crash, along with a school bus full of kids. It’s bad, Claudia. I’ve already called the private chopper pilots who usually give tourists a ride. They are helping to shuttle the injured.”

Turning away from the man, I whistled loudly, getting everyone’s attention. “Listen up! We’ve got mass casualty incoming. You know the drill. We’ve trained for this. Jessica, gather the nurses. I want injury cards on each patient entering this hospital. The most severe goes to the head of the line. Bill, get on the phone with the blood bank. We’re gonna need more blood. If anyone has first responder training, please see Stacy at the front desk. She is in charge of triage.”

“What about me?” George asked, looking around.

“You’ve got privileges. Go save a life.”

Grabbing Jess before she could run off, I whispered “Jess, we’ve got kids incoming. A school bus was in the accident. Which means we’re about to be overrun with very worried parents.”

The woman paled before nodding as she rushed off.

Directing the incoming, I noticed a familiar face walking through the doors alongside a gurney.

Running over, I gasped. “Oh my God. Banks. What happened?”

Dear God.

It was Trip.

Quickly checking his vitals, I listened as Banks explained, “We were almost home, Lidi. Then this car comes out of nowhere. Trip tried to swerve, but it was too late. He crashed right into the car and flew several feet before he landed off on the shoulder. You gotta help him, Lidi. He wasn’t wearing his helmet.”

“Take him straight to CT!” I ordered the paramedics, who wasted no time in rushing toward the elevators.

“Okay,” I muttered, looking around for someone to help me. “Banks, where is Hawk? He was supposed to be with you.”

“He’s still at the scene, helping get the kids off the school bus. Lidi, the school bus hit the semi-trailer. The driver didn’t make it.”

“Okay,” I murmured. “Okay. It’s going to be okay. Banks, I need you to go find Mike Brewer. He’s the new Sheriff.”
