She didn’t say anything, just covered her face with her hands.

He pulled her hands away and asked her again, “Is it one?”

“Yes. He was human, and I was stupid and naïve and I wasn’t careful.”

“Are you careful now?”

Oh, she knew what he was asking. Was she on birth control?

“Of course.”

His face froze in this unreadable expression. “Did you love him?” he asked, soft as a breath.

“Did you love any of the girls you took to your bed?”

“No,” he answered honestly.

She hugged the pillow closer. “Same. I think I just wanted to know what it was like to be…”

“To be what?”

“To be normal.”

He ran his knuckles across her cheek. “You’re normal to me.”

Truth, truth, truth. She closed her eyes with how good that felt to hear.

“Do you want to be my friend?” she asked him.

With no hesitation, he answered, “Yes.”

“Doo youuu…”

“Ask it,” he told her.

“Do you see me as more?”

“Yes.” Truth.

She clenched her hands under the safety of the blanket to shop their nervous shaking. “Do you want to sleep with me?”

“Yes. Not tonight though.”

“Why not?” she asked, stung.

“I don’t know.”

She flinched and eased back away from him by inches, but he was frowning up at the stars again, lost in thought, so she waited.

“You’re bigger than the others.”

She didn’t understand, and didn’t know how she felt or how to ask more questions.

“You’ve been with one man. He got you pregnant, and he wasn’t a partner in the loss. You’re different, Lucia. I don’t want to rush you. I want you to beg me when you’re ready.”

“I’ve never begged anyone for anything.”

He rolled his head against his pillow and gave her the most wicked smile she’d ever witnessed on a man’s face. “You will.”
