“It can’t be,” Levi murmured.
“You hear them, too?” I asked.
He took my hand, tugging me toward the door. “The pack is being attacked. The bears have found us!”
“LET ME AT ‘EM! I’M HONGRY!”
For the first time since I had arrived in Bend, I allowed my wolf to take over me. I shifted as I lunged for the porch, clearing the doorframe just in time. I didn’t give a shit that I had ruined yet another set of clothes. I didn’t care that my wolf side wanted blood upon its lips.
All I cared about was protecting the pack.
And as I charged forward, Levi ran as quickly as he could to keep up.
“Raven? Can you hear me?”
“SHE CAN HEAR YOU! WHAT!?”
“Give me Raven!”
I pushed my wolf’s voice down into the pit of my gut. “What? What is it?”
“If there’s any time to use your wolf’s hunger, now’s the chance. These bears are our enemies. They won’t hesitate to kill even the women and children of our pack. Make sure they’re safe.”
“Done, and done.”
“WOO HOO! IT’S FOOD TIME!”
“They’re testing your power!”
Brody’s voice caught my attention as I crested the entrance to the pack’s neighborhood. “WHAT!?”
I turned my head and saw his wolf charging out of the woods. “They know there’s been a change in power. They’re testing your resolve! Don’t worry, we’ve got your back!”
“IT’S SHOWTIIIIIME!”
I allowed my hungry wolf to take over as I lunged through the air. The bears fumbling into the neighborhood were so big and so stanchly angry that their footprints that battered against the ground shook the foundations of our homes. I set my sights on a black and white bear in front of me. I heaved myself into the air with my jaw gaped open, and as I sank my teeth into that fucker’s neck, the wolf within me shivered with glee.
“GODDAMN IT, THIS TASTES SO GOOD!”
Levi rushed behind me. “You don’t have time to eat. Come on!”
“FUCK OFF!”
I shoved my way to the surface for a second. “Wolfy.”
“I HATE THAT NICKNAME.”
“Once the pack is safe, you can eat whatever carcasses you want, and I won’t stop you. But they attack women. Children. We have to chase them out first.”
“HELL, NO! FUCK THAT! I’M HUNGRY!”
“Do you want me to respect you!? Do you want me to even like you!?”
“OF COURSE!”
“Then, protect the vulnerable first. Then, you feast until it makes me sick.”
“DEAL!”
