“Doesn’t feel so good being on the receiving end, does it?” Gi asked, having way too much fun getting in my shit. The table didn’t turn often, so I let him bask in the moment. “I can’t believe you told Lo before me. That’s crazy, but Sky is good people.”

“Don’t worry about what me and my sister talk about.”

“It’s all good. She needs somebody here in her corner.”

“How has she been since the baby?”

“It’s hard to tell sometimes. She has her moments, but she’s handling it,” Gi shrugged, and I could tell he was more worried than he let on. “She holds a lot of shit in like you do. I guess that’s why y’all get along.”

“Lo Diddy will be aite.”

“I need her to be.”

“I’m out. I’ll hit you tomorrow,” I leaned across the desk and slapped hands with him before making a mental note to holla at Lo.

With so much uncertainty surrounding our family, I needed Gianni’s head in the game when he returned to work. He couldn’t do that worrying about his family, so if I had to check in with Lo to avoid that, then so be it. That’s what family does for one another, and Hailo was family now.

Chapter Twelve

Me: Can I see you later?

Kyerra: I’m working late tonight.

Me: Luckily for you, I’ll be free late tonight.

Kyerra: I’ll call you when I’m leaving.

Me: Cool.

Sliding my phone into my pocket, I climbed out of the car. Strolling through the building, I greeted a few employees, but one caught my eye on the way to the conference room. She had to be new because I hadn’t seen her before, and I damn sure would remember if I did.

“I didn’t think you were coming,” I was surprised to see Gi sitting at the table. We hadn’t spoken much since Mack’s party. He had been locked in the house with Hailo and Serenity, but the mug on his face told me he was in his feelings about something else. “What’s going on with Trent?” I asked, taking a seat next to Gi.

“Nothing.”

“Something is going on.” He was paying more attention to his phone than he was to the conversation. I was seconds from slapping it out of his hand for being disrespectful.

“I cut him off,” Gi replied confidently, and I was confused about who the fuck gave him the authority to make that decision alone.

“That counts as something going on. Why did you cut them off?”

“He’s been fuckin with nigga’s that don’t fuck with us. That might not mean shit to you, but it does to me. Business is on hold until further notice.”

“You don’t get to make that call alone.”

“I did.”

“If you’re pissy about something else, say that shit instead-.”

My uncles and father filed into the room demanding our attention which halted me from checking Gi about his attitude.

“Where is Macklin?” Uncle Everett asked.

“We’re not his keeper,” I replied.

“He’s on the way,” Gi chimed in, providing an update.

The room was mainly silent, except for a few whispers between Lucas and Everett. Finally, Mack strolled into the conference room and sat on the opposite side of me.
