“Me and Cam Cam had that conversation already. Glad you’re on board; otherwise, shorty would’ve been here with me.”

“Yeah, right.” I rolled my eyes, glad that Cam would never look at other girls and envy their relationship with their fathers like I used to. Mack was the closest thing to perfect, and I was thankful she got to experience a love like his.

“If you want to let Cam see him, I can drop her off to remind him to make a good decision.”

“Thank you.”

“Anything for you,” he winked in a way that turned on the faucet between my thighs. All the bullshit just might’ve been worth it to end up here with him.

I dozed off on the couch until my phone chimed with a message from Tamia reminding me about dinner tonight. I didn’t want to go, but I also didn’t want my mother worried sick. Besides, I didn’t have anything else to do since Mack was taking Cam on a date to get pasta. I pretended to be sad that I wasn’t invited, but I thought it was cute. Girls needed that time to be wined and dined so they’d know what to expect when they grew up.

After hopping in the shower and getting dressed, I left the house to meet up with my mom and Tamia. Of course, Adria was already seated when I arrived because to be on time was to be late in her book.

“Where is my grandbaby? I thought she was joining us.” Adria looked around in disappointment that I had come alone.

“She had a date tonight.”

“A date?” I jumped at Tamia, sneaking up behind me.

“Yes. Mack promised to take her to get noodles,” I replied, using Cam’s words to describe pasta.

“Macklen Meraux. The reason you were in the hospital,” The cynicism in Adria’s tone couldn’t be ignored. I thought we would’ve at least ordered first but she wasted no time.

“He didn’t shoot me himself, mom.”

“No, but it had a lot to do with his last name, I’m sure, so same difference.”

“It’s nice to see you too,” I replied, picking up the drink menu because I’d need it to get through dinner.

“Seriously, Skylar. What are you doing with him?” Adria asked.

Being loved.

Appreciated.

Spoiled.

Taken care of.

Giving my daughter a front-row view of what genuine love looks like.

That’s what I was doing—allowing myself to be happy regardless of how it looked to anybody else.

Instead of explaining, I summarized it in two simple words, “Being happy.”

“Skylar. You know what I mean. I love Camdyn, but his family plays by different rules. You know that, and he does too. So again, what are you doing with him?”

“Being happy,” I stressed again, “What’s good on the menu?” I asked, changing the subject because, as far as I was concerned, my relationship wasn’t up for discussion.

Camdyn and I officially moved in with Mack. Fear tried to creep into my head and question if it was a good idea to give up my apartment, but I refused to listen. I had money, so if shit hit the fan, Cam and I would be fine. I had to believe that and allow myself to be happy because I deserved it.

“Did you talk to Tamia about keeping Cam?” Mack asked, stroking the small of my back.

“She said yes.”

“Are you sure you want to leave her with Tamia for three days?”
