“It doesn’t mean you have to like it, Tyson.”

“I don’t want to argue, Kyerra.”

“We’re having a conversation.”

“You sure? They feel the same right now.”

“Because you don’t talk to me. You talk at me, which is mostly about our son. Is this how it’s going to be forever?”

“I hope not. I need to get to the office.”

Kyerra walking out of the living room with our son was all the response I needed. I dressed quickly and headed for the office to meet Mack and Gi. We had to count the money, which required all hands on deck. Plus, it would make things go by quicker. The casino was up and running, generating more money for the city than we had imagined.

It had done a lot of good. Mack’s connection to Cam made him partial to single parents, and we started several initiatives to support. Sky had been an integral part of it all, providing context to things we hadn’t considered. None of us came from single-parent homes, so we didn’t know or understand many things. No matter what type of household they came from, children were the future, and it was our job to invest in them.

“I’m going to propose to Sky.” Mack blurted out. He spoke with conviction, like he was sure, but his body language said he was terrified.

“Are you?” I questioned because his eyes were shifty, and he could barely keep still.

“Yeah, I am.”

“Why do you look so fuckin’ nervous about it?” Gi chuckled, expressing what we were both thinking.

“I forgot both of you nigga’s were forced to get married, so you don’t understand.”

“Fuck you. Me and my wife are good,” Gi shrugged, unbothered by his jab, but I felt a slight tinge in my chest.

“What are you afraid of?” I asked.

“What if she’s not ready? If she turns me down, this shit is over. I’m not mature enough to handle rejection of that magnitude,” Mack confessed.

“Now, who’s emotional?” Gi chastised, causing Mack to flip him the bird.

“If you think she’s going to say no, I doubt you would’ve gotten that ring. Stop acting like a puss. Y’all will be aite.”

“When are you going to ask her?”

“I planned on Christmas, but shit, I don’t know if I can wait that long,” Mack admitted.

“How did you and Hailo do it?” I asked because Gi had been in my shoes, and I needed advice.

“We didn’t try to force shit. We weren’t in love. We accepted that and worked on getting to know each other. Once we did that, everything else fell in place.”

“Who gave you that poetic advice?” Mack smirked.

“Some bitch ass nigga who’s scared of Sky,” Gi joked before regaining his composure. “Don’t force it, Ty. Just take it one day at a time. It’ll play out the way it’s supposed to.”

“What if I’m supposed to be in hell the rest of my life?”

“You got your shit together. God will see that, and eventually, it’ll pay off. Stay the course.”

“Thanks, Gi.”

“For life. You know we got you,” he assured me.

After we finished the count, I stopped by the casino, and everything was moving as it should. Morgan’s face grew tight whenever he saw one of us, but he never parted his lips. He knew what was best for him and his family.

I had run out of errands to stall going home. Avoiding the hard shit is how I got here anyway, so I went home instead of dropping by Solana’s house. Ironically I thought of something Hailo said at Mack’s party.
