Hailo pranced inside while I grabbed her bag out of her car. It was no coincidence that she was already in the kitchen when I entered.

“Where are my hot chips?”

“At the store where they belong. You shouldn’t be eating that shit normally, let alone pregnant.”

“What do you eat for fun?” she huffed in irritation.

“Reese’s is my guilty pleasure.”

“I’m shocked. I didn’t think you had one.”

“I snack and balance it out with working out, which I’m about to do.”

“You have fun. We’re going to take a nap.”

“The three of us are walking later, so enjoy that nap.”

“Is it safe to go upstairs?” Hailo asked, but I didn’t entertain her sarcasm.

I grabbed her bag and took it upstairs to my bedroom so I could brush my teeth and change for my workout. I told Hailo I’d be downstairs in the gym if she needed anything. She nodded, but I didn’t think she heard anything I said. All she cared about was wrapping herself in my throw blanket for a nap.

After spending an hour in the gym, I showered downstairs so I didn’t wake Hailo. I let her get it out now because she was going walking. I didn’t know much about pregnancy, so I purchased a few books to educate myself. They were my responsibility now, and I didn’t take that lightly.

Naturally, Hailo was annoyed when she got up, and I told her we would walk. She seemed impressed when I reminded her that exercising while pregnant helped shorten labor and reduce the risk of c-sections. She agreed, and thirty minutes turned into an hour of getting to know each other. We made it back inside, and somehow it was my fault because she was exhausted. I told her we could get ice cream later for being a good sport.

“This is yours.”

“A key?” Hailo peered over her shoulder while grabbing water from the refrigerator. “Moving pretty fast, huh?”

“No faster than your ass getting pregnant. Can’t move in without a key, right?”

“I guess not.”

“We’ll need to go ring shopping and start wedding planning soon. I’m sure my mom will bring it up Sunday at dinner.”

“Can we not right now? It’s been a good week.”

“Not talking about it isn’t going to change anything.”

“I know that, Gianni.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

Hailo shut down, something she often did when she didn’t want to reveal her true feelings. Panting at the counter, she tucked her lips tight trying to control her emotions. She had a lot of practice, but it seemed pregnancy hormones had her losing this battle.

“Ignoring it won’t change shit either.”

“I’ve given up my entire life to be here. My job, and the people who love me. All I said was not right now, and you’re trying to start an argument over bullshit!” Hailo shrieked.

“I hate arguing, so before you think that’s what I’m trying to do. I would never do that to myself. On my mama, you have me mistaken.”

“It doesn’t sound like it to me. Who pissed you off today? Because I don’t deserve it!”

“I’m going out. I’ll be back later.”

“Do what you want, Gianni.”

I walked out of the door instead of replying with some shit I wouldn’t be able to take back. It felt like arguing was Hailo’s love language, and I don’t speak that. I was tapped out between Kyerra last night and Hailo today, so I hit the guys and let them know I would join them later.
