“Something! I don’t fuckin’ know!”

“Solana, wait!” Hailo yelled, but I had wasted enough time. “We’re coming with you.”

“Going with her? Are you crazy too?” Sky yelled.

“No. I don’t need y’all trying to talk me out of whatever is next. Somebody said if I want him, I have to stand up and show it.”

Hailo silently regretted that advice, but it was too late. I was going to find Quest, and my cousins would have to pay when I did. I wanted to believe this had nothing to do with me. After all, they didn’t know about our relationship. It wasn’t farfetched to consider that business had gone wrong, and they wanted retribution.

Or maybe they did find out somehow. Boiling with fury, I drove my car, clenching the steering wheel. Once I neared, I drudged up every sad memory I could think of, which wasn’t hard to do. I’d even considered our New Year’s Eve trip and the peacefulness away from Dupont Falls. Then, the thought of never experiencing that happiness again did what needed to be done.

I was a complete mess. Eyes puffy. My face was swollen with snot dripping as I pulled up to the single-family home. I used to be a daddy’s girl growing up. He couldn’t leave the house without me tagging along, which meant visits here, too. The horses were my favorite, and he’d let me ride all day. I thought he was the best father until I learned what they used this house for. Letting me ride horses was only a distraction from what went on inside.

“Sol, what are you doing here?” Mack asked as soon as I opened the door. They’d likely seen me pull up, so I started crying again.

“Why have you been crying?” Gianni asked, rounding the corner and wearing a scowl.

Scanning the room, Tyson was the only one missing.

“I-I need Tyson. Where is he?”

“Busy. What’s wrong?” Gianni asked, inching closer.

“I need Tyson.”

“Come sit down and tell us what’s going on,” Mack insisted.

“No. I need Tyson!” I yelled, taking off toward the back of the house.

I didn’t waste time turning around because I could hear Mack and Gianni’s footsteps trailing behind me as they yelled for me to stop.

I turned the corner, and Tyson caught my shoulders, holding me in place. “Solana, what are you doing here?”

“What are you doing?” I asked as Mack and Gianni rounded the corner, irritated that they’d exerted energy chasing me.

“Upstairs so we can talk,” Tyson ordered.

“No.”

“I’m not asking Solana.” Tyson chuckled, trying to nudge me toward the steps, but I shoved him to create some distance.

Reaching inside my purse, I pulled my gun and aimed it at each one of them. Gianni was pissed because he felt like we were better than this, while Tyson was furious that I was putting another man above him. In true Mack fashion, he just stood there waiting out the storm.

“Is he behind that door?” I asked, nudging my head in the direction.

“Who?” Tyson asked, trying to bait me into a confession.

“Quest!”

“So, you are fuckin’ him!” My nose snarled at Tyson, demeaning our relationship to just sex when it was deeper than anything he could understand.

“Tyson, you know this is wrong.”

“What’s wrong is you being here. What the fuck are you doing?” He asked, then proceeded to answer his own question. “You have a fuckin’ gun on us. Your family. All behind some nigga!”

I needed Quest more than anything right now. “He’s not just some nigga. Quest is my husband, and I want him back.”

The hallway grew quiet. They shared glances that I’m sure meant something only they could understand. Then they all laughed as if the idea of me being someone’s wife was insane.
