“Don’t come in my shit questioning me, then tell me to calm down.”

“Too late. Calm down, nigga.”

Morgan waved me off and walked into the living room as I trailed behind.

“You can talk that shit to Bella, but I don’t take orders from yo’ punk ass.”

“Why the fuck do you keep bringing up Bella?” I snarled, which Morgan found funny.

“I don’t fuck behind my brother like them nigga’s. Relax,” Morgan replied, taking another dig at the Merauxs. I thought the streets were just talking, but Gianni’s ex having a baby with his cousin was wild as fuck. “Y’all beefing or something?”

“No, we just don’t fuck with each other like that.”

“Why?”

“Can you get pussy off your brain and focus. If the money wasn’t short, Mo, what happened?”

He finished the text before his gaze lifted across the table. “You act like I’m the only one who touched the money.”

“It’s your job to make sure it’s right, so either you didn’t or someone else fucked up.”

Morgan’s eyes were icy and defensive, which gave me my answer.

“You fucked up, and you need to make it right.”

“I’ll handle it,” Mo conceded.

“I don’t like another nigga checking me about shit, so I handle my business so nobody can.”

Mo didn’t reply because he knew I was right, but pride wouldn’t let him admit it. Instead, he pretended to focus on his phone.

“I need an update in the morning.” I rose to my feet to drop by and kiss my favorite girl before returning to DuPont Falls. “Don’t make me have to come back, Mo.”

“I heard you, nigga!”

“Good.”

My next stop was my parents’ house. Mom was always happy to see me, even if I didn’t stay long. After loving on her and chopping it up with my Pops, I hit the road so I could take my ass home. Traffic slowed me from reaching my destination, but when I hit the city limits, my phone rang like she could sense it.

“Wassup Princess,” I answered Solana’s call.

She sucked her teeth before asking, “Are you still busy?”

“Heading back to the city. You good?”

“Can you pick me up?”

Something was wrong. I could tell from her low, raspy voice that she had been crying, so I agreed, “I’ll hit you when I’m close.”

“Okay.”

Mashing the pedal, my only concern was finding out why she sounded so sad. I was a gambling man from time to time, so my guess was her parents. They were the usual culprits because, according to Solana, everybody else was happy and worried less about her.

When I arrived, I walked to the door to meet her. Taking the bag from her shoulders, I pecked her lips as we headed for the car. Solana didn’t say a word the entire ride. She didn’t even bother to ask what was for dinner. A sure sign she was stressed because her appetite was always the first to go. She hated it when I got on her about it, but that was my job.

Curled in the passenger seat, she eventually drifted asleep halfway on the drive, and I let her. We had some shit to figure out, and I wasn’t letting her off the hook so easily this time. Solana didn’t like confrontation or difficult conversations. She’d shut down, and the tears would start streaming. I loved her spoiled ass, but that wasn’t going to fly tonight.

“Come on, Solana,” I said, nudging her.
