He holds the door open, and I enter. On the table are two glasses of water. He motions to one. “Thirsty?”

I nod, walk over, and pick up a glass. “I don’t know what it is about traveling, but it’s very dehydrating.”

Or maybe it was the fuck in the bathroom. I can’t say I’ve joined the mile-high club, but a train bathroom has to mean something. I take a drink, letting it soothe my dry throat.

He picks up the other glass and drains it. Then he looks at me but says nothing.

I clear my throat. “Since you called me here, I kind of thought you’d start.”

He nods. “Yeah. I… I want to thank you.”

I raise my eyebrows. “For what? The fuck? You don’t have to thank me for that. I don’t do anything I don’t want to.”

“For Christ’s sake, Bree. No, not for the fuck.” He inhales deeply and gazes at me. “Though that was crazy hot.”

I smile. “It was.”

He rakes his fingers through his unruly hair and tugs on it. “I talked to Dragon.”

“How’s he doing?”

“He’s going to be fine, and he swears he didn’t take anything. He’s pretty sure he was drugged.”

“Yeah. That’s so awful. But I’m glad he’s going to be okay.”

“The thing is, Bree…”

I smile. “You’re calling me Bree.”

“That’s your name, isn’t it?”

“You usually call me Brianna.” Is that even true, though? He’s called me Bree before. I’m trying to find something new and different, hoping for what he already told me in no uncertain terms would never happen.

“Brianna, then.”

“No. Call me Bree. I like it.” I move toward him, my body already responding to him.

“For God’s sake.” He inhales, holding up a hand to keep me away from him. “This isn’t a booty call. I just want you to know that.”

“I wouldn’t mind if it was.”

“Oh my God.” He paces back toward the table, refills his water from the pitcher, and drains it again. He heads back to me. “Just listen, will you? I want to thank you, and not for the fuck.”

I open my mouth to speak, but he gestures me to keep quiet.

“Please. Just let me finish.”

I nod. “Okay.”

He gestures to his bed. “Sit.”

I obey.

How easy it is to obey Jesse Pike.

The room has two queen beds, and the bed is firm. Better than mine in the room I’m sharing with Maddie. In fact, this is a much nicer room. It’s bigger, and the fixtures are classier. Not that mine aren’t classy. This is the Waldorf Astoria.

“Listen. Just listen, please. I want to thank you because…because of what happened to Dragon. It could have easily happened to me.”
