“You wish what?”

“I wish… I wish I knew what you truly felt. What you’re truly after… How you…”

Then he crushes his lips to mine again.

We groan into each other’s mouths, and he slides one hand over my chest and cups my breast, thumbing my nipple through my tank top.

He breaks the kiss again. “Do you know how much it turns me on when you wear Dragonlock stuff? I mean, I’ve seen it on a lot of women, and it never did to me what you wearing it does to me.”

I sigh against him. “Jesse…”

“Damn it, Brianna. I wasn’t looking for this. I’m not ready for this, and you’re…” He caresses my face, moves a piece of damp hair out of my eyes. “You’re not…”

Again the kiss. Our lips meet in a clashing thunder of sparks and deafening chorus.

Cymbals crash together, and the brass sections rumble around the percussion.

No flutes and clarinets for Jesse and me. No oboe or strains of a violin or cello.

No. Only brass and percussion—the sounds of lust and desire and electrically charged passion.

He walks forward, backing me toward the bed I was just sitting on.

Then he breaks the kiss and inhales sharply. “I didn’t mean for this to be a booty call.”

“I know that. But if you need it, it’s okay with me.”

“No.” He steps away from me, rubbing his forehead. “That’s not what I mean.”

“What exactly do you mean, Jesse?” I gesture toward him, beckoning him to me. “I’m right here. I want you and you want me. I already gave you permission to?—”

“Damn it, Bree! I don’t want your permission. I want your…”

I walk toward him, and he’s… He’s shaking. A slight tremble as he turns away from me.

“What do you want?” I ask softly.

He turns and meets my gaze, and I swear his brown eyes have darkened to coal black. “I want what you can’t give me.”

“What more can I give? I’ve given you everything. Even my heart, but you don’t want that.”

He grabs me then, his hold so forceful it actually hurts my upper arms. But I don’t care. He’s full of vim and vigor and fire and passion, and I love seeing him like this. It’s the same vibe I get when he’s onstage, singing.

He’s got it for me now.

“You think you’re giving me your heart, Bree. But what do you know of love?”

I absently place my hand on my chest, right over my heart. “I know what I feel.”

“You know you’ve had a crush on a man for years. A man you didn’t even know well until now. So much about me you still don’t know, Brianna.”

“I know all I need to know.”

“If only it were that simple…” He shakes his head and releases me.

I stumble, and he grabs me to steady me. He looks at the red marks his fingers left on my arms. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“I know that.”
