Bad timing. He laughs right into the mug, splattering hot chocolate all over himself. He stands up quickly before it spills on the couch.

“Sorry!” I yell over my shoulder as I dash into the kitchen for some paper towels.

He follows me, and we both grab a handful of towels to dab at his chest and chin. “I was trying to drink the hot chocolate, not wear the hot chocolate,” he says in a long-suffering tone of voice.

Naturally, I burst into laughter. “Sorry. It was just so sexy watching you drink it. I couldn’t resist.” That earns me a chocolatey kiss. “Mm… Maybe you could let me make it up to you.”

“With… more hot chocolate?” he asks hopefully.

“There’s still some left, but don’t ruin your appetite for dinner. Nice surprise, by the way. I love Bambi’s.” I take his mug and turn away to ladle more hot chocolate into his cup.

“Oh, that’s not the surprise.”

“It’s not? What is it, then?”

There’s a gentle cough behind me.

Ladle in one hand, mug in the other, I turn to find him kneeling on the floor. “What are you doing?”

“What does it look like I’m doing? I’m making an honest woman out of you. ” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small velvet box. “Blaze, will you marry me? And before you give me an answer, I want to be clear that the ring is just a placeholder. I know you’ll want to pick your own.”

“Seriously?”

“Seriously. The jeweler said we could bring it back—”

“No, seriously, you’re asking me to marry you?”

He looks at me, very serious indeed. “Blaze, I am just a boy, kneeling on the linoleum, covered in hot chocolate, asking you to marry me.”

I guess he was paying attention to those rom-coms after all. In a move that would do my mother proud, I drop the mug and the ladle on the counter, splattering hot chocolate across my nice clean kitchen, and fall to my knees on the floor to throw my arms around him.

“I don’t care what the ring looks like. Of course, I’ll marry you!” I let him wrap me up in his strong arms.

Then I pull away.

“Wait a sec, you made reservations at Bambi’s to celebrate before you knew I’d say yes!” I fix him with a stern look. “Jeremy Wainwright, are you taking me for granted?”

He shakes his head. “No way, babe. The last time people took you for granted, I ended up half-naked in a calendar. I am not letting that happen again.”

“You will if Gigi has anything to say about it.”

He sighs. “She’ll probably win, too. But you know what? It doesn’t matter.”

“Why?”

He grins. “Because we’re engaged now, and you’ve just made me the happiest man on earth. I’ll take my clothes off for you anytime.”

“I love you, Jeremy,” I whisper, and that earns me another chocolate-flavored kiss, this one even sweeter than the last.
