Instead of taking her into the front of the house, I led her around a patio to the back. We took a short path to a small seating area, and I turned her to face our new home.

I took a deep breath, wanting everything to be perfect for Sophia. This was a dream of hers. Every aspect of this place was a balance of our blended styles. We mixed the clean designs and geometric shapes I preferred with the elegance and pops of color and styles more in line with Sophia’s taste.

There was no ice palace aesthetic anywhere.

Sophia described our style perfectly as modern elegance, with a bit of whatever the hell we liked. This would be a place for us to live in, to grow in, laugh in, and find joy.

Tearing down the mansion that once stood here had released me from more than I could have realized. Gone was the Pierce legacy I’d carried like a weight around my neck.

Sophia and I were creating a new life and a new legacy.

We would have love here, memories, and new traditions filled with happiness.

“Take off your mask,” I whispered into her ear.

“Are we having a picnic? It sounds like we’re in a park.” She tugged the fabric from her eyes and squinted.

As her vision adjusted, her lips trembled. “This is ours.”

“Ours. And theirs.” I set a hand on her stomach.

It had taken us as long to get pregnant as to build the house. When it finally happened for us, we ended up with two.

It seemed Sophia and I were never meant to have things easy, but the best things in life were worth fighting for.
