Shelby appears across the car, slipping into the passenger seat before throwing me an apologetic look.

“Don’t worry,Mr. Langdon. I’m taking good care of Shelby. But you know, she’snotyour daughter, so what we do has got nothing to do with you. Right?”

He gives me a smirk that makes me want to grab him around the throat and drag him from the car.

“Everything is fine, Kevin. I’ll see you soon, okay?” Shelby gives me a little wave before Bentley floors the gas, the ice-white Mercedes zipping out of the parking lot before I can take a breath.

That little bastard.

And Shelby—I told her to stay put too.

I watch as he speeds away, not even aware he has the most beautiful girl in the world sitting right beside him.

I fucking hate him.

I need a drink.

“I’m tired of explaining myself, Finlay.”

Finlay throws his hands in the air and scoffs.

“Explaining yourself? Is that what you call it? Because to me, it looks like you’re flirting. With anyone and everyone, and you’re doing itall the time,Shelby. I don’t even think you realize!”

I bet Mom can hear him. Finlay doesn’t care what Mom can hear—he’s a possessive, argumentativeassholewho is on my last fucking nerve.

I didn’t think being with Finlay would be so hard either—it’s like having a petulant toddler.

Kind of.

“It’s myjob!”I snap back. “You know this—you even asked me out when I was at work! Why are you behaving like this?”

Finlay drags a hand over his face and steps closer to me, tilting my chin back so I’m staring up at him.

“Because you’re withme,Shelby, and everyone knows it. So when these perverts leech overmygirl, they need to know that it’s not fucking acceptable.”

“You punchedJimmy! He’s one of Kevin’s friends. He’d never disrespect me.”

Finlay gives me a wry smile.

“And he won’t again.”

“Urgh, you’re impossible.” I slump into my bed and sigh heavily. “I don’t think this is working out, Finlay.”

There, I’ve said it.

“What?” Finlay crosses over to me, falling to his knees and staring up at me with his beautiful baby blues. “Baby, come on. We’re good together.”

“We’re toxic,” I tell him flatly as he strokes my hair away from my face.

“We’re hot for each other. That’s all. Look how you were with Kellie Armstrong in the bar last month.”

“She grabbed your dick, Finlay!” I shove him, and he rolls his eyes.

“I didn’t do shit, though. You’re it for me, Shelby.”
