“Uh…” Shelby stammers as her mom gives her a meaningful look. One that saysdon’t mess this up for me.“Sure.”

“You can stay with me. I’ve got a spare room.”

Pauline’s cheeks flush, and I scoff without intending to.

You’ll be in the spare fucking room, Pauline.

“Something funny, Kevin?” Pauline asks, glaring at me.

“Nope.”

“You could stay with Ivy,” I say to Shelby, taking the drink from the server who has sprung up from nowhere.

It’s Tommy’s turn to glare at me, and I grin.

“Give your mom and Tommy some time if you catch my drift.”

Shelby makes a face.

“You could come with me,” she says, gazing at me.

“Too much work on, sorry.”

“Bullshit,” Shelby says, rolling her eyes and leaning into the crook of my arm. “You get vacation days.”

“No.”

God, this fucking girl.

“Okay, then I guess I’ll stay with Mom and Tommy.”

I whip my head to hers and swallow.

Why is she doing this to me?

I can’t be trusted with Shelby. She’s too young; she’s Ivy’s friend—

“What about next weekend?” Tommy interrupts my thoughts, and Shelby pauses.

“I’m pretty sure I can get it off work….”

Do something, Langdon.

“You know what? I haven’t taken a vacation in a while.”

Shelby turns to me, her beautiful eyes wide and excited.

God, I love seeing the effect I have on her, even if it’s wrong.

“Yeah?”

I nod before I change my mind.

It’ll do me good seeing Griffin, Ivy, and Melody, of course.

And so what if Shelby comes with me? It doesn’t mean anything is going to happen. But then she leans forward, her mouth close to my ear as she whispers, “they only have one spare room.”

Fucking hell.
