Idetestthe way he’s looking at Shelby, and before I know it, I’m wrapping my arm around her shoulders and tugging her closer to me. Her chair scrapes along the floor, and she looks at me in surprise. I don’t say anything, but I feel better knowing she’s closer to me.

The fucking dress she’s wearing leaves nothing to the imagination, and this fucker in front of me is imagining all right.

Why can’t Pauline see this?

“We did,” Shelby says politely, glancing over at me. “But then she met someone…and yeah. So I’m here on my own.”

I stiffen as Tommy’s eyes light up.

“Ever fancied living in the city?”

Shelby laughs, and it sets my senses on fire.

“I’m going to live and die in this town, Tommy.”

Tommy purposefully ignores my glare, and Shelby sighs.

“It’s a little complicated.”

Pauline frowns and leans forward, drawing Tommy’s attention away from her daughter.

“I’ve always fancied the city.”

I cringe inwardly when Tommy leans back in his chair, nodding at Pauline with fake interest.

I know it’s fake because he’s still staring at Shelby.

“Well, you’re always welcome to come and see it.”

“Is that an invitation?” Pauline flirts shamelessly, and I wonder where the fucking servers are here.

I know it’s busy, but I want this shitshow to end.

I’m tired, and it’s been a long day.

Like I’ve summoned her, a server appears to my left, a broad smile on her face. She’s way too perky for me.

We order our food, and Tommy continues the shit about the city, pissing me off even more.

“For both of you. Sure.”

He winks at Shelby, then catches me staring at him. He backtracks and moves his attention to Pauline, who laps it up.

“Ooh, girls trip into the city! We could see Ivy too, Shelby.”

Tommy grins, and I don’t miss his smug look.
