Not now.

She’s your daughter’s best friend.

“Right. Back to being scared again, are you?”

Shelby arches a brow and glares at me.

“I’m not scared, Shelby.”

“Youare. You’re scared of what people will say, aren’t you? That the twenty years between us makes what we did last night wrong. Right?”

I shake my head and shoot her a dark look.

“I don’t give a fuck what people say.”

Shelby gapes at me.

“Thenwhydeny what we have, Kevin? What we’ve had for years?”

Years.

And she’s twenty-one.

But I didn’t touch her, not until last night.

“I’m not denying it,” I say, scrubbing a hand over my face. “You’re a stunning girl, Shelby. I told you last night that every man wants you.”

Her eyes flash.

“Except for you.”

I throw a hand in the air.

“It’s clear I wanted you last night!”

“But not now?”

We glare at one another until she groans.

“I’m not going to sit here trying to convince you that we’re right for each other, Kevin. Because you know what? Maybe you’re right. Because I’m better than being just a fuck to you. I’m better than begging a man to be with me.”

Her lower lip trembles, but she isn’t crying anymore.

My strong girl.

“Even you.”

She pushes her chair back, the sound making me wince. She heads back upstairs, returning moments later in that fucking dress, her heels in her hand.

“No, I don’t want a ride. My mom is coming to get me.”

Her voice is icy cold, and I feel fucking awful.

But this is for the best.

“Shelby.”

She looks at me, and my chest tightens. I want to tell her that the age difference doesn’t matter and that we can see how things go because I don’t want to be without her. That she’s the most beautiful girl in the world, and I want her.
