Page 64 of Destined for Him

I don’t waste a second in answering because I’m pretty sure there’s only one reason she’s calling me.

Tommy.

“You okay?” I ask my heart in my throat. “Shelby?”

“I’m okay,” comes her shaky voice, and instead of comforting me, it makes me feel violently sick. “But I need your help.”

“Anything,” I say, sitting upright.

If Tommy’s laid a fucking finger on her, I’ll kill him without a second thought.

“Can you come and get us? I don’t know who else to ask….”

“Yes.”

I don’t ask who ‘us’ is because I don’t care if she’s with Mickey fucking Mouse—I’m going.

“I’m sorry, I know it’s far….”

“Shelby, where are you? Are you safe?”

My head fills with many scenarios, and when she lets out a whimper, I almostflyto the city.

“We’re hiding,” Shelby confesses, her voice trembling. “I’ll text you the address; come to the outhouse in the yard. It’s beside the swimming pool. The gates are open because of the party.”

“Okay,” I tell her, heading to the truck. “I’m on my way.”

Why is she hiding?

Who from, Tommy?

I’m destined for prison, that’s for sure, because if I almost buried Finlay because hesaidshit about her I didn’t like, then I don’t even want to know what I’ll do to Tommy.

Unless Tommy is hiding with her…but my gut tells me it’s him.

Shelby wouldn’t call me unless she had to, and I could hear the fear in her voice.

She’s scared.

I curse the distance between us as my truck eats the miles, and I thank my lucky stars I’m sober enough to drive right now.

Not that I’d stop for the cops anyway; they could follow me all the way to Shelby.

My hands ache from gripping the steering wheel so hard, but I can’t help it.

I should never have left her with him.

I thought she’d move on and move out, but something has happened.

And if it’s scared Shelby, you can guarantee it’s bad.

I can’t get the image of her hiding in the fucking outhouse out of my head, and I swear if she’s got one mark on her, I’ll set the house on fire with him in it—her mother, too, if she’s not stopped it.

“Come on, baby,” I say to my truck as I push down on the accelerator. “We’ve gotta get there faster.”

If Shelby is hiding, maybe Tommy has a gun.

I glance in my rearview mirror and smile grimly.
