Good job I do too.

The drive is silent, and I’m surprised I don’t hear Laura’s voice.

This would be the perfect opportunity for her to remind me that I should only be doing this because Shelby is Ivy’s best friend, and as much as I try to tell myself that’s true, my racing heart tells me otherwise.

Because if anything happens to Shelby, I’ll never get over it.

I’m still an hour away, minimum, so I don’t waste any more time.

I call Griffin.

“Hey, this is a nice—” Griffin drawls.

“Can Ivy hear me?” I rasp, praying she’s out of the room and I’m not on speakerphone.

“What? No, she’s asleep. What’s going on?”

Griffin’s voice is deadly serious now, and I quickly tell him about Shelby’s phone call.

“Shit!” Griffin mutters. “Why didn’t she call me? You’re so fucking far away!”

Guilt eats at me as he rambles on, all the while grabbing his things so he can go to her.

“She’s hiding in the outhouse. He might have a gun; I’ll send you the address.”

I can barely breathe.

“Buddy, calm down; I’m going. I’m in my truck now.”

I swallow, unable to trust myself to speak.

“I’m on the road, Kevin. She’ll be alright.”

“Stay on the phone,” I choke out, hating how needy I sound. “I have to know.”

Griffin says nothing, and we drive silently, miles apart but together in spirit.

“I’m nearly there,” Griffin says, his voice tense.

I wonder whether I should pull over because if he tells me something has happened to Shelby while I’m driving, I don’t trust myself not to drive into a tree or some shit.

“There are loads of cars,” Griffin says finally. “Nice cars too.”

I bite back my irritation as he parks his truck, slamming the door behind him.

My foot is on the fucking floor, but I’m still too far away to do anything.

“Go to the outhouse, Griff. Go round the back, fuck the house.”

“Kevin, man, I’ve got this.”

I hold my breath as he moves, the sound of his feet on the ground the only thing I can hear.

“I can see it,” Griffin tells me, and my heart rockets into my throat. “It’s dark; you’re sure she’s in there?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”
