Yes, it's a boy, and no, I couldn'twaitto find out what we were having.

"I know, baby," I say, smiling as he shields his eyes from the sun. "Not long left until I can give him to you to carry around."

Kevin grins at me with a boyish delight in his eyes.

"I can't wait."

I take two glasses from the tray and head over to sit beside Ivy in the shade. She's stroking her pregnant belly with a yawn when I hand her a glass.

"It sucks being pregnant in the summer from hell," Ivy grumbles, fanning her face with a magazine. "Note to future us—no getting pregnant and birthing in the summer ever again."

I chuckle and clink my glass against hers.

"Sure."

Ivy reaches over and strokes my belly, cooing.

"Hey, little bro!"

"That's so weird," I say with a laugh as she snorts.

"Yeah, and what's even weirder is that your son will be my son's uncle, and they'll be practically the same age."

I shake my head at the chaos and watch Griffin and Kevin joking around. Kevin is tanned and delicious, and he's been working out even more lately.

Not that I'm complaining.

"How's your mom?"

Ivy sips her drink and smacks her lips together with delight.

"She's fine. She's dating some guy called Roy now, and he's timid as fuck."

Ivy laughs, but then her expression turns serious.

"That's better than her previous choices, though."

We fall silent, and as the soft breeze struggles to move my hair, I allow myself to think of Tommy.

It's been years since that horrid night, and with the help of Kevin and my therapist, I've managed to put it behind me.

But my mom and I weren't as close.

I guess I still wonder why she didn't ever see the warning signs because, as a soon-to-be mother, I'd never let my child come to any harm.

"Do you think you'll have any more kids?" Ivy muses, watching Melody and Lauren chase one another around the garden with a smile.

"I want a house full," I say with a laugh. "Without saying too much, I think it's inevitable."

Kevin meets my eyes from across the yard, and I smile back at him, butterflies still fluttering like crazy in my stomach.

Will I ever be able to look at him and not turn into mush?

Probably not.

"Lovely," Ivy says as she follows my gaze. "You've made him so happy, Shelby. I mean it."

She reaches out to hold my hand, and I turn to her.
