“How’s your crazy mate?” Carlisle interrupted my heated thoughts, and I turned my attention back to him.

“What, mate?”

“Ellie.”

“Crazy? She’s not crazy, Car. She just doesn’t like you,” I reminded him, and he scoffed, making a face.

“Yeah? What is it she said, you’re too good for me? Fucking twat.”

I was numb, his words and bitter laughter stinging me.

“Is that so hard to believe? You’ve cheated on me countless times—”

“Yeah, butyouchose to stay with me, sweetheart. I’m not going over this again anyway. Your mate is crazy.”

“I stayed with you because I love you,” I whispered furiously.

“I know you do.” He ruffled my hair with a grin before nodding at me. “I love you too, mush.”

“Can we go?” I asked, wanting to get out of this place as soon as possible.

Carlisle got up, tugging on his jacket as women around the restaurant eyed me with envy. As much as I loved Carlisle, he had changed so much. He never used to speak to me like he did now and only ever gazed at me with adoration.

“What now?” He huffed, and I pinched the bridge of my nose.

Sometimes reality hit me so hard I couldn’t breathe. Carlisle didn’t love me like he used to or care. I noticed how he checked out women, but it was more about how hedidn’tlook at me.

“You haven’t even said I look nice,” I said, tilting my head as he looked at me with exasperation.

“Jess. You’re my fucking girlfriend. Of course, you look nice, or I wouldn’t be with you.” He laughed and glanced around us. “Do you wanna see this film, or should we go home? I’m knackered.”

“Can we go home?”

“Yeah, let’s do that. I’ll stay for a bit, but I’m working away this week, so I’ve got to go home to pack my stuff.”

Great.

So, in addition to ditching me to go out, he’s working away all week.

“I’m out next weekend,” he declared, casting a look left and right before crossing the road. “But I can see you on Sunday.”

I nodded, fighting back the tears. It was a horrible feeling, being second best. But it was worse being third or fourth—friends, work, gym, and then me.

It felt like he’d moved on, yet I hadn’t. Of course, I was still in love with him, but maybe it was the guy he used to be, not the man he is now.

“Fucking hell, she doesn’t need to be heading in there, does she?” Carlisle nodded at a woman taking her children into McDonald’s.

She looked exhausted and glanced up at me, noticing me watching her. She smiled before turning back to her kids, and Carlisle shuddered beside me.

“Not for any amount.”

“What?”

“I wouldn’t fuck her for any amount.”

He scoffed, dragging the car parking ticket out of his pocket.

“What makes you thinkshe’dfuck you?” I replied as he laughed.
