Three pairs of eyes shifted to me, and I felt exposed.

If I said yes, that meant being alone with Logan whilst those two... well, I didn’t know what would happen with Logan around.

If I said no… Then I saw the look on Ellie’s face, pleading with me to say yes, her eyes darting to her brother pointedly as I raised my eyebrows.

Logan frowned at my response, turning his head to his sister.

“This isn’t really happening, is it?”

Raff dropped his gaze, but Ellie bit her lip, turning to her brother.

“We don’t even know whatthisis, Logan, but I need you to back off. I’m a big girl.”

Logan narrowed his eyes at Raff, who rubbed his neck awkwardly.

“You know I like her, man, I always have….”

“Really?” Ellie squeaked, her face lighting up with happiness.

I noticed the vein throbbing in Logan’s neck, a telltale sign he was getting angry, even with my basic knowledge. Without thinking, I reached out, my fingers wrapping around his wrist as his eyes flickered to me with surprise.

My skin felt like it was on fire; the hairs on his arm were silky soft beneath my fingers.

I squeezed his arm without a second thought, moving my hand down to his, which he captured immediately. The cuts on his hands were still healing, and I didn’t dare move in case I hurt him.

I wanted to tell him to calm down, but the words wouldn’t come out.

“I need a drink,” Logan said, dropping my hand as he stood up, striding over to the bar.

My hand tingled without his touch, and I examined it, almost as though I’d be able to see proof that I’d held his hand.

“Jess... do you mind if we go back with them? My brother’s okay if he’s in the right company. He seems in a good mood, doesn’t he?” Ellie directed the latter question to Raff, who stroked Ellie’s hand, his attention clearly elsewhere.

“Hmm? Oh, Logan. He’ll be fine.”

“He doesn’t seem fine about you two,” I pointed out, glancing back at his brooding figure at the bar.

He was hunched over a bottle of whiskey, staring at the tumbler vacantly.

“He thinks I’ll fuck her and leave her.” Raff exhaled, shaking his head as he looked at Ellie. “He doesn’t believe me when I say I like you.”

“Probably because you’ve got a girlfriend,” Ellie said, pulling her hand back.

“That’s not how it is, trust me. Margot and I... it’s not serious. If I thought for one second I had a chance with you. I’d fuck her right off. Any excuse at the minute.” He winked, and Ellie met my eyes.

It was then that I saw it, the raw adoration shining in her eyes. It was her opportunity, her chance to explore the uncharted waters of Raff.

“I’ll talk to Logan,” Raff said, dropping a kiss onto Ellie’s hand before heading towards his best friend.

“He’s overreacting. He doesn’t care about me,” Ellie exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air with frustration. “We’re not even close anymore.”

“Imagine how you’d feel,” I suggested, playing the Devil’s advocate. “If he was to do that with me.”

Ellie paused, then shook her head. “You wouldn’t—”

“Say I did,” I said carefully.

“Then I’d be happy because it would finally make you dump Carlisle,” she cackled before groaning. “Look, I’m not bothered who Logan fucks or who he doesn’t. I don’t know whyhe’sso interested in what I do!”
