I dropped to the leather sofa as she filled the kettle in the kitchen, asking me what I wanted to drink.

“Coffee, please,” I called back.

“But it’s evening. You shouldn’t have coffee at this hour because it will affect your sleep—”

“Why do you bother asking me then?” I laughed as she chuckled.

“Because I want you to make the right decision without me telling you why.”

Ellie was like a sponge for knowledge, but she was also easily distracted. It didn’t stop her from spurting random facts to me.

“I read that twenty percent of married men tend to cheat, compared to only thirteen percent of women. That’s actually referring to sleeping with someone else,” Ellie said, handing me a mug of tea.

“I’m not married, Ells,” I sighed, dragging my phone out again.

“It doesn’t matter. Carlisle is not good enough for you.”

“Based on...?” I arched a brow at her as she held her hand up, her other fingers tapping one at a time as she listed the reasons for hating my man.

“You argue constantly.”

One chipped red nail was folded down as she tapped the next one.

“He’s cheated on you.”

“We’ve worked through that,” I said defensively, but she ignored me, tapping another finger.

“He thinks he is God’s gift to women. He flirts with people when you’re not there.”

I rolled my eyes as the door slammed, making us both jump. Ellie waved her hand dismissively.

“Logan. Anyway, he speaks to you like shit. He cancels all of your plans, and then when he does something wrong, he blames you!”

“Ells, your voice is doing the high-pitched thing again.” I laughed, and she groaned.

“Because I’m pissed off! Your boyfriend is a dick, and you’re way too good for him,” she said with finality, curling her legs beneath her as she blew on her tea.

“Alright, Montel Williams. What the fuck do you know about relationships? Since when have you had a successful one?”

The voice from the door made my heart skip a beat as Logan walked in, shaking his head at his sister. His black hair was the colour of ink, and his steely glare only made something deep inside me weep. But he didn’t even look at me, stomping into the kitchen.

“Fuck off. You’re just as bad!” Ellie shouted at his retreating back. “I thought you were out?!”

“Don’t worry, ugly. I’ll be out in a minute. I’m bringing some friends round later, so make yourself scarce.”

What?!

My eyes met Ellie’s, who frowned.

“No, I’ve got Jess here. You’ll have to go somewhere else.”

“You can go upstairs. We’ll have the lounge.”

“Who are we? I’m not having random girls here again, Logan. Mum will go mad—”

Logan walked back in, leaning against the doorframe as he munched on crisps. I tried not to look at him, but my eyes were fighting me, desperate to see his eyes.

“You’re so full of shit.” He laughed coldly.
