“What?”She gasped, her body stiffening. “That fuckingbastard! I’m going to hang that cunt out to dry! Who was she? I’ll have her, too!”

I fell into my best friend’s arms and let myself cry for everything.

“It doesn’t matter.”

“But itdoesmatter! Urgh, he’s such a fuckingpig, and heneverdeserved you!”

My stomach churned again, and I inhaled slowly when the door to my room opened. My dad stepped in with two mugs in his hands, smiling kindly when he saw me.

“I’m going to drop these here,” he murmured, dropping a packet of bourbon creams beside the mugs on my desk. “And I’m not going to ask you anything, Jess. I’m just glad you’re okay.”

“Thanks, Dad.” I closed my eyes as he wrapped his arms around me and buried my head into his chest. “I’m sorry if I upset you.”

“Upset me? I thought you’d lost it,” he said shakily, ruffling my hair. “I just rang Ellie; I knew she’d be better than me.”

“You thought I’dlostit?” I frowned, and my dad and Ellie exchanged a look.

“Maybe in a few years, we will look back at this and laugh,” Dad said softly. “But I’ll tell you this; I better never see thatwankeragain.”

I dropped my eyes, knowing I had probably poured my heart and soul out to him. I cringed, but Dad shook his head at me.

“You’re better than him anyway.” He shrugged as Ellie agreed, nodding her head. “Listen to your friend. She knows.”

“That I do! Sheneverlistens to me. I always tell her—she’s beautiful and deserves so much better than him!” Ellie exclaimed, squeezing my hand.

“I do have one question, though.” Dad rubbed the bottom of his chin thoughtfully.

I looked up, dreading to think what it might be.

“Who’s Logan?”

Ellie’s eyes flickered from my dad to me; her mouth opened then closed again as I grimaced.

“No one,” I mumbled, avoiding Ellie’s gaze.

“Well, he must besomeonebecause you kept saying his name.” Dad frowned, his eyes darting from me to Ellie. “Anyway, I’m off to work. Will you be okay?”

“She’ll be fine; I’ll look after her.”

Ellie smiled reassuringly at my dad.

“I’ve left some money on the table downstairs if you want to order food tonight,” Dad said, and I felt a warmth of adoration for him.

He had to be both MumandDad, and he was amazing at it, despite what he thought.

“Thanks, Dad, sorry for….”

I waved my hand in the air at myself as he chuckled.

“Hey, we’ve all had our hearts broken. But if I see Carlisle anytime soon, it will be hisjawthat’s broken,” he said darkly as Ellie clapped her hands.

“Yes!”

My dad left, and Ellie turned to me, her eyes wide.

“Have you slept with Logan?” She asked bluntly.

“No!” I scoffed, shaking my head as I sipped my juice. “No, I haven’t.”
