“Iknowyou like him, Jess. Fuck knowswhy, but I can see the way you look at him. Plus, you were eating his face off the other night.” She wrinkled her nose up with distaste, and I bit my lip.

“Sorry, babe, I know he’s your brother.”

“It’s not about him being my brother, which of course, makes it awkward as fuck if you fall out; it’s about the fact my brother is aslag. He doesn’t care about women, and once he’s slept with you, he won’t care about you either.”

I dropped my eyes to my hands, realising that Ellie’s summary was probably correct.

“I know you probably think I’m harsh, but I’m just being straight with you. You’re mybest friend, and Logan isn’t the guy you need. You need a man, not a boy that takes drugs and fights for money.”

“He fights for money?” I echoed, my heart aching at the thought of him doing that.

“Yep. He wins most of the time, but of course, he gets so fucked up on coke after that it’s pointless him doing it. It’s just sad.”

“Why does he do so much coke? What’s his problem?” I asked, knowing Ellie would probably get defensive. But, to my surprise, she didn’t.

“It’s all to do with Dad.” She rubbed her eyes as though she was exhausted and shrugged. “When we were little, we idolised him. Logan wanted tobehim. But then… Dad changed. Got into drugs. Started fucking around on Mum.”

Ellie stared down at her fingers, picking at the skin as I waited for her to continue.

“He was losing fights because he was always fucked, and he never came home. Then, when he did, he was sick everywhere and just a fucking mess. Mum was the only one that was there for us.”

“I’m so sorry,” I whispered; the thought of Ellie and Logan seeing their father like that killed me.

“The thing is, Mum gave him an ultimatum. Your family, or your shitty lifestyle.”

She didn’t need to tell me which path he chose.

“Logan refused to believe it. He hated Mum and me for making him leave, and he started to skip school and fuck around. Then, finally, he just… went out of control. I hate what he’s done to Mum. He’s just like Dad.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat as Ellie’s eyes shone with tears.

“So I guess you understand why I don’t want my amazing best friend to be with him. You deserve better, especially after Carlisle.”

I remembered Logan offering me his hoodie and how he gazed at me when I said I’d sleep with him as long as he didn’t expect anything else. The way he held me all night without trying anything on. The hurt in his eyes when I left to see Carlisle.

“I get it,” I mumbled, not wanting to upset Ellie further. “How are things with you and Raff?”

Ellie exhaled, lifting her forefingers beneath both eyes to wipe away the tears about to spill down her cheeks.

“Raff won’t hurt Logan. He just won’t.”

“But it’s obvious he cares about you,” I argued as Ellie nodded sadly.

“He wouldn’t evenkissme, Jess. He said if he fucks up, which he thinks he will, he couldn’t lose Logan as his best friend. It’s just one of those things; he values his friendship more.”

“Fucking hell, Ells.”

“Come here, you,” she said, opening her arms for me to crawl into. “We’re best friends. So let’s help each other, yeah? Pizza and chocolate?”

I rested my head on her shoulder, inhaling her sweet perfume.

“I love you, Ells.”

“Right back at you, sister.”
