I grabbed my phone and texted Carlisle to see if he was awake.

“They also said a leopard never changes its spots.” Ellie shrugged, picking at her chipped nail varnish.

“Can we not do this?” I pleaded with my hands on my hips.

“Fine, I’m sorry. Want some toast?”

“Only if you’ve got Nutella?” I said hopefully as she laughed.

“You have your own jar here.”

I grinned as she left the room and moved closer to the window, wondering if Logan was still there.

Nothing.

Disappointment welled in my chest, but I pushed it away, reminding myself that flirting with my best friend’s brother was not only off-limits, but I also had a boyfriend.

So, I needed to stop thinking about Logan Zander.

Now.

Chapter Three

JESSICA

“I’ll get the whole chicken with a salad,” Carlisle said, beaming at the waitress. She fluttered her fake eyelashes at him, and I couldn’t help but cringe.

“I’ll get the chicken pitta with chips,” I said as Carlisle frowned. “What?”

“Chipsanda pitta?”

“Are you joking?” I said, fury clenching my chest.

The waitress swallowed, her eyes widening as Carlisle dragged his gaze over my body. His eyes hardened, and he shrugged, folding his arms.

“Anything else?” The waitress asked, and I shook my head, my cheeks burning.

Carlisle paid, and I stomped off to our table, tears threatening to spill down my scorching cheeks.

I wasn’t slim.

I was overweight if you listened to the National Health Service. They had this Body Mass Index that measured your weight versus your age and height; boom, there was a target. Mine was about two stone less than I was, but I didn’t feel like Ineededto lose weight. I knew Carlisle’s friends all had slim girlfriends, but I was who I was.

I wasn’t changing to fit Carlisle’s distorted view of reality.

“Now, what’s wrong with you?” Carlisle sighed, dropping cutlery and napkins onto the table.

“Really?” I said bitterly, shaking my head at him in disbelief.

“I think you need to consider what you’re eating. You don’t doanyexercise,” Carlisle said, sitting back in his chair.

“Just because you spend your spare time at the gym doesn’t meanIhave to,” I retorted, folding my arms across my chest.

“No, but it worries me that you’ll die young, Jessica. You’re really unhealthy. Don’t you want to treat your body like a temple?”

“I’m not having this argument with youeverytime we come out for food, Car. So if you don’t like the way I am, leave me!”

The fear that held my heart captive sneered at me, and for a second, I was sure Carlisle would stand up and walk away. But instead, he stared at me, chewing on the inside of his cheek before he shook his head.
