“Say that again,” I muttered, lifting up to kiss her mouth like it was an addiction I couldn’t resist.

“You’re gorgeous,” Jessica repeated against my mouth, and we fell back onto her bed.

“Does it bother you that I haven’t got ambition? You seem like the kinda girl that needs that,” I said, swallowing down my fear.

This was the problem. Parents saw me as a waster as I didn’t have an education, and I’d gotten into more fights than I could count that have ended with police cautions and nights in the cells. I’d stolen shit, and I wasn’t proud of it.

“You know what I need?” She whispered, her eyes drinking me in. “You.”

“You don’t know me, beautiful. Not really.”

“Will you let me get to know you?”

I stared past her towards the window where thin curtains did little to hide the brightness of the morning.

“I’m sure my sister’s told you about me. How did that go, by the way?”

“Yeah, she was fine,” Jessica shrugged. “She doesn’t want you to break my heart, but otherwise… she thinks it’s a shit idea.”

We both chuckled then, and she bit her lip.

“It’s usually me that has those,” I confessed. “Shit ideas.”

“Logan,” Jessica said, her voice cracking until she cleared her throat. “I’m not the best either. A relationship scares me just as much as you.”

“It doesn’t scare me, sweetheart,” I said, kissing her fingers. “It’s just not me.”

“So what do we do?” She asked, her voice trembling. “Because I’m confused.”

“We just…carry on seeing each other. I like you, Jessica.”

Her face broke into a broad smile, and she kissed my mouth. It was a lingering kiss that held the promise of so much more, and it felt good.

“I feel the same,” Jessica admitted, her smile encouraging my own mouth to follow suit. “Just…don’t push me away.”

“I’ll try, but how could I push you away when you look like that?”

“Can I ask you something?”

Here we go.

“You’re going to anyway.” I shrugged, and I fell back into the pillow.

Jessica sat up, looking at me with her exquisite emerald gaze, the one that pins me to the bed.

She could pin me to the fucking bed any day.

In fact, that was an idea; the thought of her tying me up stirred excitement within me that I’d not felt in a long ass time.

“Why don’t you like your sister?”

Whoa.

“Fucking hell, what is this, family therapy?” I scoffed.

“She’s my best friend. You’re her brother, and I want to know.”

“Ellie is… well, she’s Ellie.”
