“Good thing you had someone smart enough to talk you into it,” she pointed out.

“Oh yes, whoever could you be talking about.” It warmed Lexi to see her friend so happy and at peace after so long. She deserved all the happiness after losing her first husband, leaving her widowed with a two-year-old.

“Lex?” Her attention shifted, and she looked over at Mia. “He loves you too, you know.” She shot Lexi a taste of her own innocent face before walking away to check on the kids and Melody in the living room.

Standing outside her apartment in an edgy lace skirt and a violet wrap-around shirt that formed a low Vee, showing off the remnants of his bite on her breast from the other night. Lexi heard the rumbling of Noah’s exhaust as he turned the corner. Her excitement to see him grew the closer he got. Absentmindedly , she rubbed her forearm, touching the nearly healed tattoo they’d been working on touching up the last time she’d headed into the shop.

A watercolor collection of flowers bloomed from beneath her watch and curled around her forearm, covering implications of a past she’d rather forget. It curled around and faded out at her elbow. Because of that tattoo piece, she’d accidentally met Noah when her artist didn’t show up.

“Hello there , gorgeous. Are you free for the evening?” Noah broke her out of her thoughts and smiled down at her, one elbow on the frame of the door.

“It depends…” She eased the door open, pausing with one foot on the frame until he continued even though all she wanted was to be near him.

“Your incentives are artichoke pesto pasta, fresh rolls, and at least one, screaming orgasm on this dick.”

She paused long enough for Noah to shoot her a disgruntled look, then hoisted herself into the seat, pulling the door closed behind her. “Gee, Mister, that’s as tempting as a stranger with a van full of candy.” She grabbed her seatbelt, pulling it around her waist.

“They don’t come with this.” Noah’s hand cupped her face, sinking his fingers in her hair; his lips crashed against hers, neither of them certain where the moan had come from. Her hands fell away from the seatbelt, sagging into his touch. Lexi rested her hands against his chest, her fingers fisting the fabric.

Noah pulled at her bottom lip, nipping the sensitive skin until she yelped. He soothed it with his tongue, kissing her slowly until they were both breathless and unwilling to move. She rested her head against his chest, one hand pressing against his jean-clad thigh.

“C’mon, babe, if we don’t leave now I’m going to fuck you against the building.”

“It wouldn’t be the first time.”

“Incorrigible brat.” Noah gripped her thigh, throwing the truck into drive. “We’ve got places to be, sweet pea.”

“So demanding,” she sassed, settling in her seat.

“With every blistering swat to your ass, you bet I am.”

The summer air was cool against their skin as they sat in the back of his pickup. Noah tightened his arms around Lexi, pressing a kiss to her head, and he tucked her tightly against his side. Music played on the dashboard, the back window open as it filled the night air.

They laid against the back window of the truck, sitting on the inflatable, truck bed mattress and blanket he’d tucked away for them earlier in the day when he’d enlisted Zander’s help for this evening's plans.

He wore his best poker face when they arrived at the bluff, doing anything he could to stuff his anxieties aside. Noah pulled the cover from the truck bed to reveal the bed, snacks, and twinkle lights his junior conspirator insisted they needed in the darkness.

There was a mini cooler filled with drinks… that he almost forgot in the back room of the tattoo shop after his last client’s shading session had gone on longer than planned.

If it wasn’t for his friend, Wes, reminding him, he probably would have forgotten the food as well. Not to mention the lump burning a hole in his jeans.

Lexi’s inquisitions were spoken only in her facial expression and were forgotten when he pulled her into the truck and handed her a water bottle—followed by the dinner he’d made and packed away for them for the evening.

Full and satisfied afterward, Noah sat contentedly with Lexi in his arms. Her eyes closed with a sigh, and she tipped her head back against his shoulder, turning her nose toward his neck seeking warmth. “Quiet, good.”

“Hmm,” Noah agreed, kissing her temple. “Been a few nights since you’ve been by, sweet pea.” The bed never felt the same waking up without her in it.

“You know I’ll see you when I see you.” She brushed it off as she looked out over the bluff. Her fingers absently picked at the bands of his leather bracelet, tugging and tucking the loose strings beneath the band. “Mia and I picked up another event. Well, it’s more of a fancy dinner party.”

“You two have been awfully busy lately.” I’m proud of you. “How is Melody adjusting to having more responsibilities?”

“Former school teachers seem to have the advantage of multitasking coming as easily as breathing. She seems to be handling it pretty well.” Lexi grinned, turning her head and looking up at him. “I’ve noticed she’s been coming by the shop a lot lately.”

“It’s not for me.” Noah laughed. “Yes, there is a special brown-eyed wood maker she seems smitten with.”
