“Unless someone here is helping him.”

“But who?”

“You’re gonna need to talk to Gunner about that one. Sugar and I were a few years behind him in school. Gunner and John were in the same grade. Don’t know if they hung out together, but Gunner would be the best to ask. Unless you want to ask John’s sister. But I’m gonna tell you right now. Jane isn’t going to tell you shit. She hates Sugar more than John. And Jane has never acknowledged the boys. No one from the Stanley family has.”

“Head on back to Sugar. And, Enigma, make damn sure she doesn’t leave your sight. I don’t trust this guy. Until he’s in police custody, Sugar is in danger.”

Nodding, I left.

Chapter Eight

Sugar

Startled by a loud commotion downstairs, I walked over to the door, placing my ear against it, hoping to hear better, when I detected the sound of several feet ascending the stairs. Jumping back, I rushed over to the bed, laid on the floor, and scooted myself underneath the bed, praying I didn’t catch something or find a family of critters, rodents, or worse, spiders waiting to eat me.

Eugene wasn’t the cleanest person on the planet.

“SUGAR!” Gunner shouted as he slammed the bedroom door open, making me flinch.

Shit. They knew I was here.

King was gonna be pissed.

“Sugar, come out. We know you’re in here,” Pyro said frantically. I could tell something was wrong by the sound of his voice.

He was worried.

“Is she in here?” Sarah, Gunner’s wife, asked, walking into the room.

“I can’t see her.”

“Are you sure he would hide her here, Gunner?” Pyro queried.

“Yes,” Gunner groaned, walking into the room. “Enigma may be many things, but smart isn’t one of them. Plus, he can’t go without a shower. Fucker is a clean freak.”

Ha! That’s what he thought.

Gunner needed to look in Eugene’s dresser drawers, his closet, or under this bed for that matter. Just hiding under here, I feared I’d catch some third world disease. Eugene may have his brothers fooled, but I knew Eugene. The man was anything but neat.

“Hi, Sugar!”

Sighing, I turned and smiled at the cute little face grinning at me.

“Whatcha doing under there?”

“Hiding?”

“I’ve loads better places to hide. Come see me next time. I’ll hook you up.”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” I groaned, scooting out from under the bed when I heard Gunner say, “Got her, King. She’s here. Yeah, I’ll lock her down. How is Trip?”

That got my attention.

Rounding on Gunner, I asked, “What happened to Trip?”

“Sure thing, brother. See ya soon,” Gunner said before hanging up on his brother. Looking around the room, the man frowned. “I think this is the cleanest I’ve ever seen this room.”

“It’s a pigsty,” I snipped, snapping my fingers at Gunner. “Trip. What happened to him?”
