“So?” she said. “I don’t care. Everyone knows who I am. They knew who I was before that damn show and now they know more. What’s a little bit more attention?”

Her voice was rising and people that were walking around outside stopped to look at them.

“This is crazy, Grace. Calm down.”

“Nope,” she said. “I’ve got a temper and I’m showing it to you. If you don’t want everyone else to see it, then agree to talk to me.”

He looked around at people staring at them. “Fine. We can go to your house.”

“Works for me,” she said, walking to his truck.

“Your car is back there.”

“It is and once we talk you can bring me back to get it. This way you can’t ditch me.”

He frowned. “Do you think I’d do that?”

“I don’t know what to think,” she said. “The man I love wouldn’t be wallowing in self-pity that he wasn’t good enough. I’m going to prove to him that he is. Actually, I’m kind of shocked that my family sticking up for him for months wasn’t enough, but I guess he’s blind as well as stupid.”

“Stupid,” he said. “This is how you think we are going to clear the air and go back to normal? By insulting me?”

“It’s getting you to talk to me, isn’t it?”

She was grinning, but it was forced. She hated saying what she was, but some of it was coming out without thought at this point.

He climbed in his truck and they drove to her house.

When they were in the house, she kept walking until they were sitting outside on the beach. She needed it to calm down and she knew he would too.

They both took a seat and she just stared at him.

After two minutes of silence, he asked, “What do you want me to say?”

“Tell me what happened on Saturday,” she said.

“You don’t know?”

“I know that Hunter came to see me in my office because I was there and not here. I’m not going to keep secrets. He told me I was being a fool. Then he said how nasty Lara was and that she was playing on your emotions.”

“I knew that,” he said. “I knew she was lying when Hailey saw the picture of Lara on crutches.”

“And you still felt like shit?”

“It’s hard not to,” he said. “She had her life turned upside down.”

“She did,” she said. “But so did you. Did you ever stop to think about that? You made something out of it. That’s the tattoo, isn’t it? It’s over your scar. I know you’ve got one there. You wanted it covered with something to remind you family was what was important.”

“Yeah,” he said.

“Well, you’ve got more than just your family. You’ve got me and mine unless you are going to throw it away. I figured you’d at least fight for it.”

“I don’t need to bring this into your life,” he said.

“Please,” she said, waving her hand. “This is nothing. I’m a Bond. We weather shit like this all the time. That’s why we’ve got Hailey.”

“She is pretty scary. She was so calm she wasn’t even paying attention half the time.”

“She is always paying attention. Just like me. I just wish I’d seen more. Or asked more. Maybe I should have pushed you to tell me all of this with Lara beforehand.”
