“It wouldn’t have changed a thing that happened.”

“Nope,” she said. “I’m glad you can recognize that. But it would have changed my reaction. It would have changed your feelings of self-worth.”

“I doubt that,” he said quietly.

“I can be pretty persuasive. Didn’t I get you to date me?”

“You did,” he said, grinning.

“And I got you to fall in love with me too.”

“I might have done that on my own.”

She smiled. “Then I can get you to forgive yourself for something you shouldn’t take the blame for to begin with. No one in my family is blaming you for anything. They never have and they never will. But if things don’t work out with us, then are you going to blame me? I’m the one with the temper. Not you. You walk on water to most in the family.”

“Janet and Mitchell do think fondly of me,” he admitted. He was slowly coming around.

She got up and moved into his lap. “Am I getting to you now?”

“A little,” he said.

“Good,” she said. “I’m going to keep it up until we are back to normal. If it takes a day, a week, a year. I’m not giving up.”

“Don’t,” he said. “Don’t give up on me.”

“Never. I expect you to never give up on me either. Because we know I’m going to lose it again with you on something. Why else do you think my family sent you to California with me? To keep me under control.”

“You’ve got great control,” he said. “You would have been fine.”

“But I was better with you. I’ll always be better with you. Do you believe that?”

“I do,” he said, kissing her.

“Good. Then we are finally getting there.”

He laughed and picked her up. “We can go anywhere you want. Just tell me and I’ll take you.”

“As long as you’re with me, I don’t care where it is!”

EPILOGUE

Five Weeks Later

“We can’t wait to see how this ends,” Hailey said.

The family lawyer looked at him and grinned. He had to say he was thrilled Lara would finally be out of his life and he could put his past where it belonged. In the past.

Thanks to Grace’s family.

He’d apologized to the woman he loved repeatedly. He said he was a coward, a fool, and embarrassment and pride kept his past where it was hoping he’d never have to explain. He should have known that wouldn’t be the case.

More so, he was worried she’d be disappointed in him.

Hailey had sent the recordings to Lara’s family who had no idea what she’d been doing. Since Lara had always said her family controlled her, it was the plan they would now too.

Lara’s parents knew the ramifications if the police were brought in and they handled it. It appeared to be over.

“I know,” Grace said. “I’ve been hearing this for weeks.”
