“It’s fine,” he said. “Otherwise I’d just be sitting around. You said you’ll be back to the docks by eight?”

“That is the plan. I’ll let you know if I’m late. I’ve got your number.”

She did now because he pulled it up to text her to come an hour earlier.

“Just text me if you’re running late,” he said. “I’ll be at the docks anyway.”

“Oh, remind me when we land I’ve got something for you.”

“You do?” he asked, turning his head. “What’s that? Is it food?”

She grinned. “I’ve heard more than once how much you like to eat. That maybe you eat a lot of fast food?”

The appalled look on her face said it all. “I’m on the go a lot.”

“I know. It’s made the rounds that some people give you food when you fly them places.”

“We always appreciate food,” he said. It was usually family that fed him. Grace was considered family. Well, she was family to Egan. Just a different branch.

The only other billionaire branch.

Maybe he’d thought she was sweet on the eyes the first time he saw her.

And that he enjoyed talking to her and knowing she’d be the type to throw back a beer with the guys and not get all fussy and fashionable on him. He didn’t do well with high-maintenance women.

He had too many demons in his past with women who were in a higher class than him.

Not that he thought Grace would give him the time of day for more than a beer and some jokes.

Which was how it would be better to think of her anyway.

“I’ve been in a bread-making mood,” she said. “There is half a loaf there and a container of stuffed shells. I made them yesterday for my grandfather and had extra.”

“Do you hear that thumping over the blades?” he asked.

“No,” she said, looking panicked. “What is it?”

“It’s my heart racing over having dinner. I know what I’m eating once I get Conrad here and am back at the docks waiting for you.”

She reached her small hand out as if she was going to swat his arm, but she couldn’t reach him. “Not funny in the least.”

“Sure, it was,” he said.

She liked to crack jokes with him in the past; he was only doing the same. Though she wasn’t smiling so maybe he wasn’t as funny as he thought he was.

It’s not as if he saw her often. Just flying back and forth when she needed a lift or at a family function they both were attending. She said she didn’t have enough time to wait and board the ferry. He’d have to say he agreed, but he was spoiled and didn’t have a reason to ever ride it.

When Egan got married in a few months, he’d see Grace again too.

He’d have a lot of eyes on him as the best man and would have to be doing his part that day too.

Grace had a smile on her face when he landed twenty minutes later so at least he didn’t scare her too much. They’d been joking about anything he could think of.

He shut the helicopter off and watched as she climbed out. He wasn’t positive about what she had going on tonight, but she was dressed up.

Not in a dress but in black pants with a longer brown jacket that covered her hips. He got a glimpse of some sexy black pumps. He didn’t think she was going on a date but didn’t or wouldn’t ask. It wasn’t his business.

“See you in a few hours,” she said.
