I glared at Matt, who shrugged and chuckled.

“Yes. Fee and I are officially dating.”

There. The lie was out there. Fake-dating, dating, the difference was really only Fee’s and my business.

Cristo chuckled. “You must have a death wish, while I, for my part, will stick to the local cuisine now that I’m here.”

Laughter came from across the room, and my attention was drawn to Fee as if she was a powerful magnet, and I, a cheap piece of scrap metal, pulled to her…

…even against my better judgment.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Ilooked up when Sophie and Cara approached the table in the small Italian restaurant I chose—still on the premises of the hotel.

After that crashed breakfast, we decided to have a girls-only lunch, as well, which was perfect timing, because Maria, Alex’s mother, had decided to demand some time with her boys—as she called them.

Watching those three men—those three tall, dark, and dangerous Mafia bosses—being scolded by their mother, and falling all over themselves to appease her—was actually pretty hilarious.

Even though Alex had been far more reserved in his behavior towards his mother than Gabe and Cristo and even Matt.

But even he couldn’t get out of the mandatory on-site visit to their family home.

And so they took off.

All except for Matt, who’d been tasked to serve as our personal security detail—aka babysitter—Alex’s fancy title for my prison ward—and who’d been studying me from across the restaurant ever since I left my room.

I narrowed my eyes and stared him down though that didn’t phase him at all. It was annoying the self-confidence those guys had.

And very irritating.

But also…the way he looked was almost as if he was interested—in a silent, reserved kind of way. But maybe I was wrong—since my sexual interest barometer was all kinds of out of whack.

“Finally.” Sophie plunked down on the chair next to me. She was showing, but not yet to the point where her belly would have an effect on her mobility.

“Finally?” I raised my brow and smiled. “You already fed up with your husband?”

Sophie sighed. “Nope. But those Falcone men are a little bit much, sometimes.”

“You mean slightly obsessive, jealous, overprotective, and irritatingly dominant?” Cara said.

I shot my head around and stared at her. She’d just accurately described Alex.

But how would she know?

Sophie chuckled. “I guess Cristiano isn’t much better than Gabe and Alex?”

Cara sighed. “You wouldn’t believe it. He treats me as if I were there to steal the family jewels—if he doesn’t treat me as if I was a nun.”

I laughed. “You would be a bad nun but a totally bad-ass jewel thief.”

Cara rolled her eyes. “What? Because I’m such a mousy person, nobody would even notice I’m infiltrating their lair?”

“Cristo apparently noticed. Also, why didn’t you go home with Dad and Jemma?” Sophie asked while studying the menu.

“Cristo’s mom asked me to accompany her here. And let me tell you, she has wrapped Dad around her finger like you wouldn’t believe it.”

“Oh, I do believe it,” Sophie said, and for a moment, I was a bit envious. Was I the only one who hadn’t so much as talked to Maria Falcone?
