I handed the hot drink over the counter, taking in her disappointment at the lack of digits scrawled on her cup. I almost wanted to apologize, especially as Lilly noticed, turned on her heels and walked toward the backroom.

She was still uncomfortable around me, and I couldn’t blame her. I owed her an explanation for what I tried to do that night. But it was best if I stuck with my original plan. Graduate, move back to Brooklyn, start my teaching career.

This pull I felt toward Lilly would fade. With enough time, I’d be back to normal.

If I told myself that often enough, I’d eventually believe it, wouldn’t I?

I rolled my head on my neck, the crack releasing tension in my muscles, as my phone vibrated in my pocket.

I pulled it out, surprised at the new text from Mia on my screen.

M: Will you and Lilly kiss and makeup already? You’re going to South Bronx whether you like it or not.

I rolled my eyes, my fingers flying over the screen.

S: She doesn’t want me there anymore.

M: What on earth makes you think that?

S: She’s barely spoken to me all week.

M: Oh, she’s just embarrassed. You know what happened, you were there. Pink frosting can make a person do crazy things. I should know ;)

Fuck.

How much did Mia know? Did it matter that she knew?

S: Of course you know what happened.

M: Yes, of course I do. Now get over yourself and talk to her.

S: *Groaning emoji*

M: Be a big boy and fix this. She doesn’t need to worry about you AND her exam. She’s already got that lanky fucker of a boyfriend distracting her.

I snorted. At least Mia and I could agree on Trevor.

S: I don’t think so. She doesn’t need me there.

M: Oh you dense, fit, sexy, sexy man. She does need you.

M: She was anxious that night, and you know she’s been desperate to pass this exam. It’s just a misunderstanding. You both need to talk it out.

This time, I didn’t hold in my groan.

S: Fine, I’ll figure something out.

M: *Horned smiling emoji* Glad to hear it. By the way, I heard the sight of you shirtless is quite breathtaking. Send pics?

Chapter 25

Shawn

Thursday afternoon

Tristy’s Coffee Shop

I dragged myself into the backroom, watching Lilly stiffen as she noticed me.
