“And?”

I smiled as he pulled my hand into his lap anyway.

“You always gotta be touching me.”

“Damn right.”

I shook my head, but I didn’t pull away.

A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door before the doctor walked in.

“Good morning. How are we doing today?’

“Good,” I replied.

Kyrie nodded beside me. “Wassup?”

I cut my eyes at him. The doctor smiled, then sat down and pulled up my information.

“So, I see we had a positive home pregnancy test.”

“Yes.”

“Before we get started, I want to go over a little of your medical history and get some information about any previous pregnancies.”

My fingers stiffened inside Kyrie’s hand. I knew the question was coming before she even asked it.

“Is this your first pregnancy?”

My throat tightened.

“No.”

Beside me, Kyrie went still.

“Okay. How many previous pregnancies have you had?”

“One.”

“And was that pregnancy carried to term?”

I swallowed, suddenly wishing I had prepared myself for this conversation before walking into this office.

“No.”

The room seemed to get a little quieter.

“I had a miscarriage.”

Kyrie’s head turned toward me.

I could feel his eyes on the side of my face, but I couldn’t bring myself to look at him. Instead, I kept my attention on the doctor as she asked a couple more questions about the pregnancy.

Kyrie never interrupted. He didn’t ask why I hadn’t told him or make the moment about himself. His fingers simply tightened around mine. That small squeeze almost broke me more than anything he could’ve said.

When the doctor finished typing, I finally asked the question that had been sitting heavy on my mind since I saw those two lines on the pregnancy test.

“Does having a miscarriage before mean…” I paused, rubbing my lips together. “Does it mean something could happen to this baby too?”
