Immediate response.

I forced myself to look.

A narrow window had been built into the wall beside us.

The hangar appeared beyond it.

A small aircraft waited near the open exterior doors.

Snow blew across the runway.

A pilot lay motionless inside the cockpit.

Kane stood near the wing, favoring his injured leg.

One arm circled Elena’s throat.

The gun in his hand pressed against her side.

She was conscious.

Barely.

The bullet had struck high in her shoulder.

Pain filled her face, but she remained on her feet.

Wynn stood twenty feet away.

My gun was in her hand.

Minser stood beside her.

His shirt was soaked with blood.

The offline Meridian registry rested inside Kane’s jacket pocket.

“Give me the location of the archive,” Kane said.

Wynn kept the gun aimed at him.

“Release Elena.”

“You aren’t in a position to negotiate.”

“Neither are you.”

Kane smiled.

“I have an aircraft. The facility is about to explode.”

“Then I suggest you decide quickly,” Wynn said.

Minser took a step forward.

Kane pressed the gun against Elena’s wounded shoulder.
