“Take the shot,” Jase yelled.
“The sniper is shooting from that parking structure across the street!” Mateo yelled.
“Where? Which one?”
Mateo pointed to one of the many parking complexes attached to the Mall of the Emirates. Dammit, Jase had specifically picked this crowded spot for the meet to avoid this kind of shitshow.
Fucking Kraken!
“Got him,” Tanner said as he crawled back from under the G-Wagen. “What have we got?”
“A sniper too far away for us to shoot,” Mateo said succinctly.
“I’m a decoy. The rest of you scramble. I want him taken out before one more civilian is shot. Got it?”
Jase heard three affirmatives and watched as Mateo, Jonas, and Tanner took off in three different directions. They all crouched low, zigzagging. Thank God Gideon had dressed them up in high-end clothes, so they blended in with the people here near this expensive part of Dubai. With a sniper shooting into the crowd, nobody would question them running, either.
Another shot plowed into the Mercedes. Good, that meant it hadn’t hit a civilian, and he was still the target. Jase grabbed the handle to open the passenger side door, but he couldn’t. It had been too much to hope that somebody would have left their vehicle unlocked. Jase shot out the passenger window of the vehicle.
“What are you doing?” A man shouted at Jase in Arabic. The young man turned around and motioned to two other teenagers. “He’s got a gun.”
“I sure do,” Jase responded in their language. “But I’m not shooting at anybody but that asshole up there who has killed those people on the sidewalk. I’m the good guy.” Jase pointed across the street.
“What are you doing?” One of the new teens demanded to know.
Jase ignored him and unlocked the passenger door from the inside. Then he climbed into the G-Wagen. One of the stupid assholes got hold of his ankle and pulled.
I don’t have time for this shit!
Jase turned and pointed the gun at him.
“Let me loose or I’ll shoot you instead of the murderer up there.”
All three of the teens took a step back. Then the first one stepped up again, and Jase held up his gun. “Back off and wait for the police.”
“I hear the sirens,” one of the other young men said.
“Good. Let them capture me. In the meantime, leave me the fuck alone!” Jase turned away from them and crawled into the driver’s seat, then attempted to roll down the window.
No luck.
He only had one bullet left in his gun and one back-up magazine, but he didn’t have any choice. He had to shoot out the window.
He leaned back, turned his head, and shot. Once again, the hole went through the driver’s-side window and he had to pull the glass out so that he had room enough to maneuver.
Thud.
The sniper’s bullet hit the dashboard.
Fuck, that was close.
Jase scrambled over into the backseat where he didn’t have the steering wheel blocking him. Another shot hit the passenger headrest.
One of my men better be over in that parking garage by now.
Why the hell Kostya put him in charge of this part of the overall operation, he wasn’t sure. But right now, he sure as hell wasn’t happy about it.
Jase pushed out his empty magazine and shoved in the new one. Decision time. Blow out another window, or just let the sniper continue to occupy his time aiming for the front seat?
