Hana and the girls had brought in some pizzas, and now, they sat at a table in the corner. Everyone except Levi and Pippa. They’d been here for a few minutes earlier, then they’d left to take little Rosie home.
My prima ballerina was wearing her tutu. Her laughter brightened the dark mood in the MC. Call it spider senses, but something was up. I had to assume it had to do with Kodiak. Most of the board clustered around the president’s table, and I could feel the emanating tension. Dozer sat with Sully near the front door, and Jazzy was behind the bar with Bullet.
“Something feels off.” I tapped my fingers on the table.
Tank and Cruz were at a table next to the pool table. McKelle and Ryatt played a game of doubles with Kiss and Blue.
“Have you seen Kodiak?” I asked Vega.
“Last night.” He lowered his voice. “I hooked up with him and the sisters over at the Foxglove near the Landing Strip.” He glanced around the room. “I was hoping he’d be here. Fuck, dude, I’m worried about him.”
“I know. Do you think he suspects I went to the board?”
Vega seemed to think about it for a moment. “I don’t know. Maybe. He’s living like he’s a fucking ghost haunting his own life. Open road, full throttle. No fear of anything.”
“He’s not answering my calls or texts.”
“Then assume he knows. He’s running two phones. I’m pretty sure he’s dealing. Last night, he was racking lines like a candyman. Between him and Skye, they snorted half of Columbia.”
“He’s not working alone. Who the fuck does he owe a favor to?”
“Gotta be connected to the sisters. Part of me hopes he just goes nomad. Steele, I never would’ve imagined a situation where I wouldn’t have his back. Brothers until the end. But I’m fucking tired of looking over my shoulder.”
Lili rushed over to my table. “Can I go out to the playhouse?” she asked breathlessly. Seven’s twins hovered nearby.
“Stay out of trouble.”
Along with the twins, she ducked under arms and squirreled around legs as she ran through the chapel and out the doors.
Vega smiled as he watched her. “This ain’t the life for him.”
“It could be if he’d pull his head out of his ass. Nothing wrong with doing a little weed on the weekends, but he’s muling blow. If he’s dealing, he’ll take the club down, and us along with him. I agree with you. He’s my brother, but I don’t want him around me or my kid. Fuck, bruh, it sucks to say it, but I don’t trust him anymore.”
Vega leaned closer to me. “You did the right thing. Eventually, he’s going to run out of road. I don’t want to be around when he fucks over the wrong person.”
A shadow fell over the table. I lifted my gaze to Tank. The big biker’s gaze narrowed on me. Beneath his beard, his lips pulled into a snarl. The man was a legend in the MC. Loyal to the bone. Bled Heller colors, and he’d served time for his Heller brothers.
According to Dozer, Tank had no love for Kodiak, and apparently, because of our former association with the Crawlers, Vega and I didn’t rate high with him either. Forget that we’d bled for this club, too.
“Want to join us?” I asked.
He pulled out a chair and sat. “Where’s your friend?” he quietly demanded.
“Haven’t seen him.” No reason to pretend I didn’t know this was about Kodiak.
He crossed his meaty arms on the table. “No one misses church. First, you, and now, Kodiak.”
I leaned back in my chair. “I trust Jazzy will handle it.”
“Nah. You’re going to tell me where he is, or you’re going down with him.” He lunged out of his chair and slammed his palms onto the table. “Fuck you and fuck your Crawler brothers.”
Vega wasn’t a fighter, but he wasn’t going to back away from a challenge. He stood, setting the table off balance. “My patch is the same as yours, brother,” he said to Tank.
“Then fucking prove your loyalty. Where the fuck is Kodiak?”
I surged up. “Take a step back,” I said to Tank.
“I’m not his fucking keeper,” Vega said. “You want to come after me, you better have a good fucking reason.”
