"For the Baron?" The Marquis said. "Have you asked Tulip about that?"
"Oh, don't be so jealous. You know everyone wants the Baron!" She said.
Cherry cast a mean look at the Marquis. She grabbed my hand.
"Come on sweet child, I shall introduce you to the Baron," she said.
"I'm nineteen!" I said.
Cherry rolled her eyes. She then began to pull me through the crowd.
The Marquis called after Cherry.
"You'd better ask her just who she wants to do the honors! Ask her about the man in the shadows!" He yelled.
Cherry didn't even look back. She just pulled me along. We cut through dancers on the ballroom floor.
"What's he talking about?" Said Cherry. "Whose the man in the shadows?"
"He's the one I'm supposed to lose my virginity to," I said.
Cherry stopped short in the middle of the dance floor. She looked directly at me.
"What are you talking about?"
"It's a dream I keep having. It's why I came here," I said. "Only I think it was a mistake."
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Cherry said.
Then I decided I'd had enough of this. Why did I even have to explain myself to this person?
"Fuck!" I said. "I don't even know you."
I started to blink back tears. People dancing by looked at us, many of them whispering.
"Nobody knows anyone here," Cherry said and shrugged. "That's why we've all got on masks. That's the whole point."
"But you don't understand, I was looking for the man in the shadows," I said.
"Oh, you poor dear, you're coming apart," said Cherry. "Come here."
She pulled me and held me. It was a warm, tender hug. I hadn't been hugged by anyone like that since my mother had died.
I started to genuinely cry then.
"Oh, good God, we're here to have sex, not cry, darling. Come one," Cherry said.
She then led me to another corner of the room. Here, too, were couples and threesomes having sex. This time I turned my eyes away from them.
We sat down on a sofa. Cherry put an arm around me. She held me in close.
"You know, you could always lose your virginity to me," she cooed. "If you wanted."
"How would that work?" I said, darkly curious.
"Oh, there are so many ways," she teased.
She placed a kiss on top of my head.
